CHAPTER 1: Introduction to Information and Communications Technology

(ICT)
OPENING ACTIVITY
Form five groups. Each group is assigned to specific electronic devices.
1. a mobile phone- A mobile phone (also known as a hand phone, cell
phone, or cellular telephone) is a small portable radio telephone. The
mobile phone can be used to communicate over long distances
without wires. It works by communicating with a nearby base station
(also called a "cell site") which connects it to the main phone
network. If a user happens to be located in an area where there is
no signal from any cell site belonging to the cellular network provider
he or she is subscribed to, calls cannot be placed or received in that
location.

TASKS
A. Group Activity
Prepare a 5-10 minutes oral report about your group’s assigned
electronic device by answering the following question:
1. Is the device a part of a computer system? If yes, is it a computer
peripheral? If not, how is this device classified? Let’s assume that our group
was assign to mobile phone. Mobile phones are device and indeed considered
computers .Yes, it is a computer peripheral because it is a device that is connected
to a computer but is not part of the core computer architecture.
2. Where do you usually see or use this device? Do you find it useful in your daily
activities? Why or why not? We see and use this device either public or private
places. I find it very useful because mobile phones are used for a variety of
purposes, such as keeping in touch with family members, for conducting business,
and in order to have access to a telephone in the event of an emergency. Some
people carry more than one mobile phone for different purposes, such as for
business and personal use. Mobile phones are also important because they allow
you to store data. Pictures, text and audio can be stored on many mobile phones.
This enables you to carry your files around wherever you go, ensuring that you are
always with important documents for work or your personal life.
B. Individual Activity
Search online for media outlets that use two or more modes of
communication with their customers. Examples are a new program on TV and a
radio broadcast over the AM frequency.
Do a comparative analysis of the types of outlets the communication
network currently uses in terms of the following
1. Content
2. Audience reach
4. Personal preference

a. Metropolitan area network b. Storage/System area network
c. Wireless local area network d. Wide area network
A. Group Activity

I. Work with the same groupings. Discuss among yourselves how the Pass
the message relates to the chapter discussion by answering following question:

1. What was the pass code in the game for? Why is it important to have a
“pass code” in a computer system? The passcode in the games was to relay or pass
the message to the different members or players. Passcode provide the first line of
defense against unauthorized access to your computer and personal information.
The stronger your password, the more protected your computer will be from
hackers and malicious software

2. How was the concept of wired and wireless connections applied in the
game? Which one do you consider wired? Wireless? The concept of wired and
wireless connections applied in the game is that the player one, two, three, four
shows wired connection because they show physical contact with each other
although they shout the passcode before whispering. While player five until last are
atill considered wire connection because instead of whispering they have to write in
a small sheet of paper to access with each other, but it also considered the player
five that he/she shouts out loud the passcode that can access it for everyone
without a process of physical connection, it enables multiple players to use the
network remotely.

II. Imagine life without computers. How is it like? Now imagine the future with
everything going computerized or digital. How is it like? Nowadays we cannot
imagine our life without computers and the fact that they become so important
that nothing can replace them. Computers are already part of our life. Computers
are used various fields such as schools, malls, hospital, banks and many more. If
we imagine our future being computerized and digital it has both the positive and
negative effects. The positive effect is that our lives would be easier, faster, better
and more fun. But the negative is that we will lose the ability communicate or
interact because everyone is busy using high technology. Inability to handle normal
tasks because of dependence on devices that makes people lazy. Degrades morals,
values and promotes negativity that when there’s a misunderstanding to someone
it’s easy to post it in social media accounts without thinking what would be the
consequences of the action and what would be the effect to other people. And
safety issues, health problems due to expose of technology and many more.

B. Individual Activity

mobile version. Compare and contrast the version in terms of content, layout,
and design. For class presentation, create a poster highlighting the difference
between the two.

This app can be seen in mobile or web yet in terms of their appearances and
arrangement they differs because YouTube in a web is much detailed and bigger in
terms of fonts than mobile YouTube app. This is how web and mobile differs in
terms of layout; another factor that made this two differ from each other is the
design. As what we can observe in the Web and Mobile App they look like similar to
each other but if we will try to examine the feature of an mobile and web app we
can see how this two differ. Designing web application is hard to design since each
and every browser, device differs a lot and a lot of the screen size should be taken
into factor. Mobile application has a definite guidelines and kind of restrictive to
some extent.

CHAPTER 3: The Internet and World Wide Web

OPENING ACTIVITY
Film Viewing
 Watch the video from TED.com explaining the World Wide Web.
 Video link: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-is-the-world-wide-web-

 How does the web reflect the society and the individuals?
The World Wide Web, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the
medium of the Internet. It is an information-sharing model that is built on top of
the Internet .The Web is just one of the ways that information can be disseminated
over the Internet. The Internet, not the Web, is also used for e-mail.Usenet news
groups, instant messaging and FTP.by developing the World Wide Web as we know
it today, revolutionized the way humans communicate and share information with
each other. The Internet is a massive network of networks, a networking
infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a
network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long
as they are both connected to the Internet. With the rise of the Internet in recent
decades, its impact on society has been transformative at multiple levels –
including in communication, access to knowledge and social interaction. The web is
so much part of our lives because in content & structure it reflects both the wider
society and our individual minds and it connects those minds across all bounderies
not only ethnicity, gender, and age but even time & space.

B. Individual Activity
I. Perform a search using same keywords with Yahoo! And Google. Then,
compare and contrast the search result. What did you find out? Share your
findings with the class.
Search Engines
Yahoo and Google each use special sets of instructions called algorithms to
automatically summarize web content, make assumptions about the meaning of a
user's search and match that search to the most appropriate content possible.
These algorithms are the most important aspect of any search engine and are kept
secret. When a user enters a search, the differences in each company's algorithm
can return very different results.
Design Differences
While aesthetic differences may seem insubstantial, they can make a big
difference in the type of information you find on each site. For example, if a user
searches a popular musician or actor, Yahoo will return videos of the searched
person at the top of the page while Google will simply return the same kind of
results it would for a normal search.
Tools and Features
Both Yahoo and Google offer a variety of extra tools and special features. Google's
robust "Maps" tool is a good example. It allows users not only to find a map to any
address, but even to zoom to street level and see an actual picture of most
streets. Yahoo offers a hotel-finding tool that allows users to compare hotel
availability and rates. Both Yahoo and Google offer shopping tools that
automatically compare the price of an item at multiple retail outlets to help users
compare prices. These are only a few of the tools offered. Both companies are
constantly adding and updating features.
I found out that Both Yahoo! and Google are search engines, they have
different features, designs, and they provide different information. Therefore Yahoo
and Google are two companies that provide services with a different type of
strategy, secure and easy access searching engines in other words these are
companies competing with each other. I think the Google algorithm is known to be
much better than any other search engine. This is because it favors quality content
over well-established links and pages, unlike Yahoo which still prefers old and well-
established websites. Not only is Google good for users as it provides them with
reliable and relevant results, but it is also preferred by new bloggers and site
owners because it gives the opportunity to build valuable links.

II. In this exercise, you have an option of the programming languages you
wish to use to create a simple personal web page. You can apply the CSS style code
to created personal web page and get a first impression what CSS style can do.

CHAPTER 4: Information, Control, and Privacy

OPENING ACTIVITY
Reading
Read the following paragraph excerpted from the “Letter to Isaac
McPherson, August 13, 1813” in The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. XIII,
edited by A. Lipscomb (1904):

1. What is your understanding of exclusive property?

❖ Exclusive property means real and personal property that is installed,
used, and necessary for the operation of an exempt facility.

2. How did Thomas Jefferson understand the principle of an “idea” as a

non-exclusive property?

 Jefferson makes some important points here that I believe. Ideas once

shared are owned by all. Ideas aren’t easily controlled. Once they are

out there, they spread organically. You can’t take an idea back after it’s

released. What’s more interesting is how ideas seem to pop up across

the world, soon after they are discovered by one individual. Ideas are
not lessened by sharing. Physical property can be hurt by sharing.

Letting everyone use your car or sleep in your bed, has an obvious

cost to it. Ideas on the other hand lose nothing when they are shared.

Going from your mind to another’s does not hurt the idea or its merit.

It is still intact, whole, and holds the same meaning it did for the

individual from the start. Ideas are nothing without execution.

Whether good or bad, the benefit of ideas being freely accessible is

that society can utilize those ideas too. The thing is, an idea is nothing

without execution. Having an idea means little without the pursuit of

it.

3. Is there a possibility of an “idea” becoming exclusive?

 No, because Ideas are not property. They are meant to be shared, even

designed to be shared. Be open with your ideas. Share them, discuss

them, make them better, and then, most importantly, act on them.

4. Do you agree with Thomas Jefferson’s concept of an “idea”?

 Yes, everyone has ideas, but acting on them is what makes the

difference. It is fair to say that some ideas should be shared with

society, as the benefit is obvious. Others should not. This is where the

lines begin to get blurry, as Jefferson acknowledges the difficulty

himself. What we need to do better, is understand when we should be

open and gracious with our ideas, and when we should protect them.

In either case, value from the idea will still depend on execution.

A. Individual Activity
Identify a game you are familiar with and have played frequently online
or on your mobile phone. Explain briefly the mechanics of the game and the
reasons why you like playing this game. List the game items that players often
buy to either improve their gaming skills or upgrade their avatars. Identify the
items that need virtual money and those that require real money. Prepare a
short presentation in class on the advantages and disadvantages of having your
“good experience.”
GAME NAME: CLASH OF CLANS
Clash of Clans is an addictive game where you build a base, protect it, train troops,
and attack others. As you get more and more gold and elixir resources, your base
will get bigger and better
Clash of Clans is an online multiplayer game in which players form communities
called clans, train troops, and attack other players to earn resources. There are
four currencies or resources in the game. Gold and elixir can be used to build and
upgrade defenses and traps that protect the player from other players' attacks and
to build and upgrade buildings. Elixir and dark elixir are also used to train and
upgrade troops and spells. Gems are the premium currency. Attacks are rated on a
three-star scale and have a maximum timed length of three minutes. The game
also features a pseudo-single-player campaign in which the player can attack a
series of fortified goblin villages and earn gold, elixir, and dark elixir (levels 51-75
only). The game starts with two builders, but the player can have up to five
builders through
buying them with gems and even a sixth by getting and unlocking the OTTO Hut in
Builder Base 9.
BASIC MECHANICS – MAP & STRATEGY
Complete the tutorial. When you start a new game of Clash of Clans, you start with
a Town Hall, Gold Mine, Army Camp, and Builder's Hut. The game has a tutorial
that teaches you the basics of how to build your base, attack other bases, train
troops, and get new resources. Read the on-screen instructions and tap the icons
that have an arrow pointing to them to complete the tutorial.
 When you are finished with the tutorial, you will have new cannon,
elixir collector, elixir storage, builder's hut, and barracks with trained
troops.
 Try to keep your town hall in the center of your town to keep it more secure.
 The tutorial will offer you some basic information to get started.
Open the Shop. The Shop is the icon with gold and a hammer in the lower-right
corner. This is where you purchase new buildings for your town. Some items can
be purchased with gold or elixir, while others require gems to purchase. Some
require experience or a levelled up town hall to purchase. Use the following steps
to navigate the shop:
 Buildings and Traps: This section is under the tab that has an icon that
resembles a saw and hammer. This is where you will purchase most of
your items from. Tap the Army tab to purchase offensive buildings, such
as Barracks, and Army camps. The Resources tab is where you purchase
resource-specific buildings, such as Gold Mines, and Elixir collectors.
The Defenses tab is where you purchase defensive buildings, such as walls,
cannons, and archer towers. The Traps tab is where you purchase traps
you can put in your town.
 Decorations: The Decorations tab has an icon that resembles a sword in a
stone. This is where you can purchase decorative buildings for your town.
This includes statues, torches, and flags.
 Treasures: This is the tab that has an icon that resembles an elixir bulb,
gem, and stack of gold. This is where you can purchase gems using real
money. You can then use the gems your purchase to buy more gold or
elixir.
 Shield: This is the tab that has an icon that resembles a shield with arrows
sticking out of it. This is where you can buy shields to protect your town for
a certain amount of time.
 League shop: This has a tab with a league metal on it. You can earn league
medals by competing in Clan War Leagues. You can use the league medals
you earn to purchase items in the League Shop.
Purchase walls for defense. Since you have limited resources at first, place the walls
around the most important buildings only, such as the town hall, gold storage(s)
and elixir storage(s). Place the builder's huts and army buildings outside the
perimeter of the wall.
 To purchase items from the shop, open the shop and then tap the item
you want to purchase. Tap where you want to place it on the map.
 To move buildings and items on your map, tap the object you want to move.
Then tap and drag it to a new location.
Spend your gold, elixir, and gems wisely. Do not waste them, especially your
gems as they come in short supply.
 Use your gems to build builder's huts. It is tempting to use them all right
away, but you will need your gems later. The most efficient way to
spend gems is to invest in a builder's huts. This enables you to upgrade
multiple towers and other defenses at once.
 In the tutorial, you are given 5 wizards to destroy the base. Only two
wizards are needed to defeat the 1st goblin base. So if you only use two,
you will have the other 3 in your army camp already. This will let you have
wizards at Town Hall 1, which you usually don't unlock until later in the
game.
 Don't upgrade the second gold or elixir storage at first. You will need them
at level one to upgrade to Town Hall level 4, but that doesn't mean you
need them upgraded further.

Decide if you want to use real money to get ahead in the game. You can buy more
gems with real money in the shop. Gems can be used to purchase bonus items,
or more gold and elixir.[2]

 There are other ways of getting gems than spending money. So if you
don't want to spend your money, don't worry. You can get gems when you
remove trees and obstacles from the area around your base.
PROTECTINGYOURTOWN
Upgrade only what you need. Don't try to upgrade everything. Upgrade
buildings you need, such as your Town Hall or Barracks. Upgrading too much
can give you more storage than you need.
 Make sure your base is concentrated in one area. You don't need to have
your base spread out across the map. Many players agree that having
most of your base concentrated in the middle is a good strategy.
 Keep your key buildings in the most defensible position. Place your storages
and town hall in the center of your base, behind the defenses and walls.
 Put builder’s huts in the corners. This will prevent enemies from having time
to attack your huts when they attack your town.
 Continue to improve your defenses. After you have gained resources, make
your base even stronger by upgrading walls and other defenses.
 Use traps as much as possible. Traps do a lot of damage to attacking enemies
and are worth upgrading. The one-time-hit damage can easily take out
groups of smaller troops and seriously hurt larger types too. Put them in
sneaky places that people wouldn't expect.
 Protect all of your defenses. Eventually, you can aspire to more advanced
defenses, such as archer towers, and air defenses. Mortars do a lot of
damage per shot but they shoot very slowly. Keep these in the center of your
base because of their blind spot and their superb range. If you do not
protect your air defenses your base will fall to healers.

Attacking Others

Attack whenever possible. Attacking is all good. There is no downside and you can
get valuable items and trophies. You may want to lose trophies to get resources
from easier defenders. You will not get as much per raid but it's easier and you
don't have to spend as much on your army. It is easier to steal resources than
mine for them. Use the following steps to attack:
 Tap the orange icon that says Attack in the lower-right corner.
 Tap Single player or Multiplayer.
 On single player, tap one of the circles on the map to launch an attack.
For multiplayer, tap Find a match. Multiplayer matches cost 50 gold.
Check how much gold an enemy base has before attacking. You can see how much
gold each possible enemy base you can attack has. If it has none, don't bother
attacking. If it has a very large amount, it may be too well defended for you to
attack. However, if it has a large amount and you can take it, go for it. Don't take
unnecessary risks.
Deploy troops. To deploy troops during battle, tap one of the available troops at the
bottom of the screen. Then tap where you want them to deploy on the map. You
cannot deploy troops to the areas shaded in red.
 Tap and hold to deploy multiple troops at once.
Attack the treasures. Have your troops attack the storage areas for gold and elixir
first.
 After a successful attack, you will bring back more gold and elixir, which
you can then spend.
 If you are losing an attack, there is no shame in just pulling back your
troops to your base. You can always train more troops later. Know when
to quit.
 When you attack gold storage, the gold will go into your bank
account immediately. Even if your troops are killed during the
attack, the gold remains in your account.
 You get even more treasure/bonuses if you destroy the opponent's base or
town hall which gets you one-star meaning victory.
Train more troops to replace the ones lost in battle. To train more troops, tap the
barracks and then tap Train Troops. Tap the troop type you want to train. Tap and
hold to train multiple troops of the same type.
 The best ones to train at first are barbarians (for 25 elixir each)(lv. 1)
and giants (for 500 elixir each.)(lv. 1)
