“A Summary about Amazon, Jeff Bezos and collecting data | DW Documentary”

We all know that Amazon, a former online bookseller and owned by Jeff Bezos,
is collecting more data from us where in fact, they were only a single but powerful
company. In this documentary, they gathered some experts in order to discuss to us
more on how Amazon collects data from us and what will be the cause and effects of it.

On the documentary, they mentioned the differentiation of traditional marketplace

and the Amazon itself. They also said that in a traditional marketplace consist of 20-30
market stalls, you can find different varieties of products that you want. While in an
online platform Amazon, it is gigantic and exceeded the focus of what customer wants
because they sell a lot of products online. The DW Documentary failed to get an
interview on Amazon personally, but Amazon answers the questions through writing.
They use Alexa, a digital voice assistant, to speak for the interview. Amazon said that
they did not want to focus on the future, instead, they prefer to focus on some things
that won’t certainly change. They also mean that their customer always wants large
selection of products with good prices and fast delivery. Also, in the documentary, they
also assume the outcome if Amazon will be putted into a traditional marketplace. They
also mentioned that it is like Jeff following customers and knowing our preferences in
choosing products that we buy. The documentary also talked about the experiment of
some expert by buying from Amazon in one year, including by just looking up on the
website, to know what information Amazon was actually storing. It took long time to
release those data but after a long wait, they collected about 15,000 pages of Amazon
data set of that particular person in just a year of looking up and buying stuffs on
Amazon. And by that, some people may find this as a risk because it’s like Amazon
knows better that us. They also mentioned the accelerating decline of small shops
because Amazon is taking over the market. It is like a nightmare market because we
only see one company and they are not challenged anymore. Also, in terms of crimes,
they also mentioned that Amazon can identify criminals by facial recognition. In that
way, police officers will take less time in solving crimes in the city, thanks to the facial
recognition.

After I watched this documentary, I believe that technology will taking over the
world that it might be a threat for us because they know better than us. It is like
controlling our society which is very disturbing at the same time. But, if we sum up the
disadvantages and benefits of those, I think the benefits weighs more that the other. I
like the efficiency and hassle-free of an online marketplace, but if only one brand is
present in a certain country, I think it is too boring. It is always better to not just stick on
a certain brand, just my own opinion. Overall, I am very happy that I watched this kind of
documentary. I learned a lot in this documentary.
