Q1-M3: ACTIVITY. Reaction Paper

Today, as we experience this upheaval in our educational system,

distance learning has caused a lot of concern among families, especially
those who could not afford the tools needed for it. But as we all know students
have chosen different modalities which they prefer and they can afford.
Learning modalities such as online and modular has its own style and
measures for the students to learn without a physical and face-to-face
learning in classrooms. However, having this type of modality brings up a big
issue about fairness in adding extra task and assignments to students who
have chosen online learning modality and question about those who have
chosen modular learning modality if they are included and must also do the
same thing the online modality does.

Fairness as equity. Fair is defined as just or appropriate in the

circumstances and equity is defined as the quality of being fair and impartial.
Having these two as one may help students to understand that being fair
doesn’t mean that all students must do the same works and have extra tasks
or assignments, that equality is pertaining about. It is how students receive
different help or treatments from their teacher because of their level capacities
and access to connect and learn online. Students who have chosen online as
their learning modality has their secured access at home and have more
capacities to connect to their teachers. They can also swiftly know the
updates and can do all the activities anytime without having some trouble
about accessing the internet. While students who have chosen modular has
limited resources and access to connect and having these extra task that is
given through online makes them anxious, thinking if there are some updates
that they must do or they need to and must finish it as fast as they can
because the internet they have is limited. Financial problems is also a
hindrance why students can’t have stable connections at home. Having this
thoughts may really give us some clues why students need equity and why
fairness is lot more valuable than equality. Giving equal treatments or help to
students who has much necessities and students who doesn’t need it may
become pointless, insufficient, or just a waste. Because giving and getting the
exact same treatments regardless of the actual needs means its not always
helpful or necessary. Being rational in this kind of situation make us develop
our comprehensive understanding and giving us more idea on what are the
basic response we must do to overcome this issue.

Fairness as justice. Justice is a notion based on ethics and morals, and

what is morally right is seen as just Justice is also often seen as a quality of
being just or fair. However, as I’ve understand it into much deeper perception,
fairness also come out from out skewed sense of justice. Skewed because we
are inherently bias towards ourselves and being a student it is normally seem
unfair when others have more than we do or less work to do (based on the
situation) because we often think and feel that we deserve more or the best
even though we don’t. Equity and equality also aims to promote fairness and
justice, but it can only work if everyone starts from the same place and needs
the same things. There is a thin layer of similarity in purpose, but for fair
results, a different approach has to be applied. In some thoughts, whether you
chose online or modular as learning modality you must do your best to answer
and do your task without complaining because you need to learn and learning
is always accompanied by sacrifices.

The world can seem a very different place when seen from another
perspective. Therefore, we need to know about the situation of other people
before thinking that it is unfair. I believe, having extra task and assignments to
students who have chosen online as learning modality is fair and for students
who have chosen modular modality, they need to do more effort and learn
with themselves to answer their modules but if they can access to internet and
do the extra activities, why not? Just do your part and make sure that you are
learning. On the other hand, teachers need to know that students are not the
same and not having same resources at home to connect with them. And
students also need to understand that teachers are having some struggles
too, especially in approaching more than fifty students per section they are
handling. Students must take some actions and do more effort in doing their
assigned task. It doesn’t matter whether you are taking an online or modular
learning modality, what matter the most is we’re doing our best to learn.
Remember that life is not fair as it does not give equal opportunities to all.
