1. How do our individual perceptions of Africa influence its representation on a global


scale?

Lesson Objectives:

1. Students will reflect on their personal perceptions of Africa.


2. Students will analyze how preconception of Africa impacts the way it is
represented.

Content Standards:

7.1.4 Technological, Scientific, and Cultural Exchanges – describe significant technological


innovations and scientific breakthroughs in transportation, communication, medicine, and
warfare and analyze how they both benefited and imperiled humanity.

P3.1 Clearly state an issue as a question of public policy, gather and interpret information about
that issue, analyze various perspectives, and generate and evaluate possible alternative
resolutions.

Procedure:

Bell Ringer:

1. Ask students, “What is something you already know about African coming into this
unit?”
2. Prompt students to think about how we will look at the connection between Africa and
the United States. Ask students, “Do you think we’ll find a lot of connections, or only a
few?”

Main Activity:

1. Present Africa-US Connection Peardeck

Exit Ticket:

1. Have students fill out Jamboard at the end of class to think back to the Bell Ringer
question(s).
