PROMPT:

Would reparations to the descendants of enslaved people

meaningfully reconcile (help to heal) past injustices?

CLAIM: (TOPIC SENTENCE, ANSWER THE QUESTION, STATE YOUR OPINION)

Reparations to the descendants of enslaved people would meaningfully reconcile past
injustices.

EVIDENCE #1: (DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE or something we wrote in the
“Reparations Powerpoint Guide”) When using textual evidence, you must take the time to INTRODUCE the quote.
Who is speaking? Who are they talking to?
REMEMBER:
● A sentence should never start with a quote!
● Prove why it relates to the claim.
[2-3 sentences]

So, Black people have been through so much in their past during slavery, Ta-Nehisi Coates
stated, “We are inheriting the consequences of our country’s history of slavery which has
turned into structural racism, and evolved through redlining (Redlining is a discriminatory
practice that puts services, financial and otherwise, out of reach for resident of certain areas
based on race or ethnicity .”

ANALYSIS #1: (WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT EVIDENCE? HOW DOES IT RELATE
TO YOUR CLAIM?)
When explaining a quote, there are TWO things you need to accomplish:
1.Prove why it’s a good piece of evidence. How does the quote show your opinion on reparations 2-3 sentences

This proves that black people still go through things they went through in slavery, we may not
get whipped but we get discriminated, we go through financial difficulties, not getting good
jobs, and not going to the best school because of our race.
This shows that the people who would not give reparations for what black people went
through in slavery, that they don’t care and that its in thet past so they think it shouldn’t
matter anymore.

EVIDENCE #2: (DIRECT QUOTE FROM THE ARTICLE or something we wrote in the
“Reparations Powerpoint Guide”)
So,the article stated, “African-Americans still face many challenges in the United states,
including the legacy of enslavement that has been handed down to future generations. Many
African-Americans feel excluded because of race and experience racial inequality. There has
been no real commitment to reparations and to truth and reconciliation for people of Aafrican
descent.”

ANALYSIS #2: (WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT EVIDENCE? HOW DOES IT RELATE
TO YOUR CLAIM?) 2-3 sentences
This proves that black people till this day, that through all these years nothing really has
changed. African-Americans don’t really have many privileges because of their race.
This shows that they really haven't tried all these years to make reparations for us, to right the
wrong that was done to the African-Americans.

REVISIT CLAIM: (CONCLUDING SENTENCE) Restate your opinion

In closing, reparations to the descendants of enslaved people would meaningfully reconcile
past injustices.
