Tutorial 2: Electromagnetic Waves 1

1. Calculate the skin depth and the velocity of propagation for a uniform plane wave at
frequency 6 MHz traveling in polyvinylchloride
(   4 o ,   o , tan 2  7  102 ).

2. A uniform plane wave in a lossy medium has a phase constant of 1.6 rad/m at 107 Hz
and its magnitude is reduced by 60% for every 2 m traveled. Find the skin depth and
speed of the wave.

3. a) Determine the polarization of a wave travelling in the positive z direction in free

space has x and y components E xs  3e  j 0.5 z and E ys  4e  j 0.5 z  2  (V/m)
b) Find the average power transmitted through an area of 15.0 m2 in the x-y plane.

4. An electromagnetic wave traveling along z-axis in free space is the resultant of two
linearly polarized components: E x  4 sin t   z a x V/m and
E y  6 sin t   z   2a y V/m. Determine:
a) The hand of polarization,
b) The Poynting vector, S ave and
c) The average energy transmitted by the wave in 10 s through a cross sectional
area of radius 2.0 m.

5. In free space, H  0.2 cos t   x  k

ˆ A / m . Find the total power passing
through:
a) A square of side 10 cm on plane x + y = 1
b) A circular disk of radius 5 cm on plane x = 1.
