Chapter 1

The projects describe about the two courses that I have completed. The first course was on diploma
in business communication skills by ALISON and the second course was on negotiation and conflict
management by Saylor academy.

ALISON is a free online education platform that mostly focuses on workplace-based skills. It was


founded in Galway, Ireland by Irish social entrepreneur Mike Feerick on 21 April 2007.It has 17
million registered learners, 3 million graduates and 2,000 courses available for free access in March
2020. The Saylor Academy, formerly known as the Saylor Foundation. It is a non-profit
organization headquartered in Washington, DC. It was established in 1999 by its sole
trustee, Michael J. Saylor. Since 2008, the focus of the foundation has been its Free Education
Initiative which has led to the creation of 241 courses representing 10 of the highest enrolment
majors.

The business communication course discusses the rules that govern written language. It also
discusses the legal implication of business writing, the importance writing preparation and the
essential elements of business letter, including its three-basic layout. This course covers the subject
on groups and teams, the basic principle of organisational communication, importance of group
discussion, and the process of leader development. This course also focuses on teaching the process
of planning a speech and some important techniques on improving confidence and overcoming
common obstacles in public speaking. This course emphasis that effective communication can help
to promote good working relationship in an organisation. This online course on diploma in business
communication will not only helps in developing effective communication and presentation skills but
also helps to improve business writing skills. It helps to gain a better understanding on the concepts
of cross-cultural communication and its importance in modern globalised workplace. This course has
13 modules. It is divided into two units. Unit-1 has 6 modules. These modules cover topics on
introduction to business writing, writing business letters, report writing, introduction to groups and
teams, managing successful team meetings and group discussions. The second units consist of 5
modules. These modules cover topics on preparing presentations, best practises, introduction on
cross culture communication skills and developing cross-communication skills. The course
encourages students to take an online assessment after the completion on each unit. Also, this
course consists of a final exam that encourages students to test their understanding and learning
from the course.

The Negotiation and conflict management course discuses on the conceptual framework of
negotiation. It also discuses on business negotiation skills and strategies designed to maintain
healthy business relationships. This course covers the concepts, processes, strategies, and ethical
issues related to negotiation and appropriate conduct in multicultural business contexts. It also
covers the theory, processes, and practices of negotiation, conflict resolution, and relationship
management. Thus, this course gives an idea on how to become an effective negotiator in a variety
of situations. This course examines some effective and ineffective strategies, determine why they
work well, and discuss successful alternatives if they do not. It also helps to identify patterns of
negotiation and conflict resolution in different national and cultural contexts, to gain an
understanding of how interpersonal style, personality, culture, and other variables influence our
negotiation and decision-making skills. This course consists of 6 units that cover important topics on
introduction on negotiation, negotiation strategies and biases, processes and phases of negotiation,
managing different types of business negotiation, conflict resolution and international and cross-
cultural negotiation. The course allows student to take an assessment after completing each unit.
Also, its allows students to test their knowledge and understanding by encouraging them to take a
final assessment on the completion of the course.
