RUSSIAN MUSIC BOX LESSON - Kelly Rock

Objectives:
● Students will produce good tone on all 4 strings
● Students will be able to play the beginning-measure 27 pizzicato and arco
Procedures:
● Warm-Up: We will start by playing a one octave D major scale, focusing on accurate
finger positions and good intonation
● Violins and violas will play the lower octave of a D major scale, then put the two octaves
together while cellos play the D major scale all the way through twice
● We will then go over a G major scale and play through it. Violins and violas will again
play 2 octaves while cellos play through the scale twice
● We will then chunk the piece on pizz (violin 1 only, no violin 2) 1-11, 11-19, then 19-27
○ Special attention to violins in measures 11-27 with focus on the lower new notes
● Chunk it again arco
○ Special attention to violas and cellos going into measure 11 focusing on pizz to
arco quickly
● ***At each step, have a different student model
● For the end, play the music from a recording and have students play along with it
Assessment:
● Assessment will be informal and I will listen to each student at different points of the
lesson to provide feedback and takes notes as necessary
Standards:

MIB.12 The student will demonstrate music literacy.
a) Identify, define, and use basic standard and instrument specific notation for pitch, rhythm,
meter, articulation, dynamics, and other elements of music.
d) Echo, read, count (using a counting system), and perform simple rhythms and rhythmic
patterns, including whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted half notes, dotted
quarter notes, and corresponding rests.
e) Identify, read, and perform music in simple meters ( 2/4 , 3/4 , 4/4 , C).
f) Define and apply music terminology found in the music literature being studied.
g) Read and interpret standard music notation while performing music of varying styles and
levels of difficulty.
h) Sight-read music of varying styles and levels of difficulty
MIB.13 The student will identify and demonstrate half-step and whole-step patterns in order to
read, notate, understand and perform scales, key signatures, and/or chords.
b) Orchestral string student—one-octave G, D, and C major scales and introduce the concept of
minor scales
MIB.14 The student will demonstrate preparatory instrumental basics and playing procedures.
d) Identify proper playing posture and instrument position.
e) Understand procedures for basic tuning of the instrument with a visual aid or electronic tuner
MIB.15 The student will demonstrate proper instrumental techniques.
a) Identify correct hand positions, finger/slide placement, fingerings/positions, and finger/slide
patterns.
b) Match pitches and begin to make adjustments to facilitate correct intonation.
c) Produce tones that are clear, free of tension, and sustained.
e) Orchestral string student—proper bow placement, weight, angle, and speed; contrasting
articulations (pizzicato, legato, staccato, two-note slurs).

Adaptations:
● Some adaptations could include using more visual references (ex. Writing out scales), or
generally going slower.
