Lesson #, Lesson Title Lesson 4/4, The Structure of Minor Keys
Date (including day of week) Wednesday
Grade Level & Class Title Grade four general music
Period or Block (# of minutes) 25 minutes

Instructional Context
o What do I know about my students that will inform this lesson? Are there any
particular student strengths, interests, background, needs related to the
lesson?

Things to think:
I think the biggest thing to think about is some students may understand how minor
keys sound, but could get confused when it comes to the construction of keys.Using
different learning styles can help with this as well as pacing the lesson for the
students.

o How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lessons?

Things to think about:

· This is the last lesson of the plan. The next class will be review and a short
assessment on all that we discussed regarding major and minor keys.
· Students have not discussed the construction of a minor key, however they
now know how to make a major scale so we will be able to build off of that.
· Similarly to other lessons in this unit, understanding how minor scales/keys
are constructed will give students more knowledge and terminology to use
when describing music. They also will have more tools at their disposal when
composing music.

Central Focus
o What is the central focus or “big idea” for the content in this lesson?

Things to think about:

· Students should know how natural minor keys are built and what the
difference is between these and major keys.

Modifications:
Pacing: if students are struggling with the construction of the scale, we will
scale the lesson back and repeat as many times as needed.
Color: I could utilize different colors to go over the main topics of this
lesson.
