1.0. Course Objective:

Information technology has made the world to look as a small village for the modern generation.
Now, the world is dependent on networked information and communication technologies.
However, new kinds of offences are being committed with the help of information and
communication technologies. These offences are called cyber offences i.e. cyber crimes. This is
also true for India where the number of internet users is growing rapidly.
In every case of cyber crime, the criminal justice administration seeks use of cyber
forensics. Cyber forensics involves applying computer investigation and analyse techniques to
solve a crime and provide evidence to support a case. Investigators often use proprietary forensic
applications and software programs to examine computer hard drives, extract certain types of
data from files and folders, and also to recover information from encrypted files. This digital
information must be organized and documented into an official report form to be presented in a
court of law. Digital forensics is the process of identifying and collecting digital evidence from
any medium, while preserving its integrity for examination and reporting.
An effort to spread awareness about Cyber Crimes and Cyber Forensics is the need of the
hour and particularly among the law fraternity as these are the persons who have to handle the
cases of cyber crime. Lawyers, Police, Government Officers, Law students, Lecturers and the
Non Governmental Organisations must know about the details of the Information Technology
and also the regulatory framework for the control of Cyber crimes as they are in contact with the
public at large and cater for the public problems.
