MILESTONE 3.1 – REFINED CONCEPT: INITIAL PROTOTYPE

Team Number: Tues-27

1. Copy-and-paste picture(s) of each team member’s refined concept (initial prototype) on the
following pages (1 team member per page)
→ Be sure to clearly indicate who each refined concept belongs to
2. Include details on how concept was refined (what feedback was incorporated, what features
are different than previous concept exploration, etc.)

We are asking that you submit your work on both worksheets. It does seem redundant, but there
are valid reasons for this:
• Each team member needs to submit picture(s) of their refined concept with the Milestone
Three Individual Worksheets document so that it can be graded
• Compiling your individual work into this Milestone Three Team Worksheets document
allows you to readily access your team member’s work
o This will be especially helpful when completing the rest of the milestone

The Collapsing Canvas is an easel designed to articulate between standing, sitting, kneeling, and
laying down positions using a collapsing back leg on a rail. The easel could support a canvas or a
board to be used like a mobile table. The rail has a spring to assist with the force of gravity to make
it easier to lift

I believed that our client would benefit from having a device that allows her arm support with the
full range of mobility needed for painting. The construction of the concept allowed refinements on
the ball joint and linkage system. The rest would not be able to turn fluidly without the connection
to the axel being mobile (while still locking in place when pressure is placed). This allowed me to
use a Styrofoam ball to represent this full range of motion. The linkage system was not created as
envisioned, and the rest does not currently include the padding. However, these refinements will
be made if the concept proceeds to the final stages.
The suggestions given were to extend the arm support with a sleeve or a longer rest. In the design
of the initial prototype, the arm is leaned against the rest. Pressure is transferred from the forearm
to shoulder. Since our client’s pain is unpredictable, this would not be an ideal solution. Another
suggestion was to create an easier tightening/fastening system for the clamp. The current design

may not be the most efficient process and including a motorized structure could potentially provide
easier set up, adjustments and use.

Include details on your thought process and how the concept was refined below, with notes on
relevant feedback that was incorporated (max. 200 words).
The adjusting height mechanism is used to help the client paint at any height. This prototype is
completely different from the concept sketches I initially created. This prototype will require you to
adjust the sliding mechanism to help the artist paint from different angles with the support of a rod
to always help her paint. I initially wanted to create an adjustable easel, but I did not have the
materials I required.

My concept’s goal is to support the forearm of the client when she is painting. It’s composed of a
forearm sleeve attached to a retractable and expandable belt that is attached to the ceiling. The
belt would work as window blinds, you need to go up a bit in order to go down, that way when the
arm is not moving but is being pulled down by gravity the belt would not move and hold the weight
of the arm. I wanted something to support the arm but that would not limit its range of movement
because it is important for painting to have full range. The refined concept was done on Autodesk
inventor. Which is not ideal, because it is mainly composed of fabric, but I didn’t have access to a

18 Project-4
ENGINEER 1P13 – Project Four: Power in Community

software that designed fabric, and the concept was hard to do at home. I did not receive feedback
on my concept.

(mechanism is controlled by dc motor. Rack is attached to beams – one direction spreads base
and lowers height, other direction squeezes base and raises height.

20 Project-4
ENGINEER 1P13 – Project Four: Power in Community

(minimum height – allows support on the floor)

21 Project-4

(maximum height – allows for fully standing)

This was designed to allow a full range of motion from lying down to standing. The client will be
able to rest her arm on the top in any position. The height is controlled with two buttons – one for
raising the platform and one for lowering it. In the original design the main gear was controlled with
a crank. This was changed to a dc motor to make it easier for the client to control. Pressing one

ENGINEER 1P13 – Project Four: Power in Community

of the buttons will send current through the motor, spinning it clockwise. The other button will send
current through in the other direction, reversing the rotation of the gear.

MILESTONE 3.2 – DECISION MATRIX

1. As a team, use a decision matrix to aid you in choosing two concepts to proceed with.
→ Your concept titles should be descriptive (i.e., “Pencil with Hook” instead of “Design
A”)

2. The numbers you associate with your criteria (objectives and constraints) will probably be an
estimation at this point, so your top two concepts may not always end up being the top
two scoring from the decision matrix. You should provide justification for your team’s
thought process in choosing the top two concepts. This should include, but is not limited to,
explaining:
→ Your choice of decision matrix tool
→ Your rationale behind your choice of criteria
→ Why you prioritized criteria the way that you did (if ranking and/or weighing them)
→ What metrics you used to decide your scoring of concepts within the criteria

Insert your team’s top two concepts below.

Concept 1: Support N’ Slide
Concept 2: Collapsing Canvas

Include your team’s justification below.

In consideration of our decision matrix, we choose to propose the Support N’ Slide and the
Collapsing Canvas. When evaluating the Support N’ Slide the concept was able to achieve the
needed functions. Although slight adjustments would need to be made for comfort and simplicity,
functionality was achievable with this design. The Support N’ Slide supports the arm of the client
in a large range than the Scissor Lift Arm Support.

The Collapsing Canvas allowed multiple painting positions allowing easy adaptability for our client.
When comparing to the other prototypes the Collapsing Canvas was unique in its ability to adjust
the position of the canvas with ease. This is valuable for the client who adjusts their position while
painting to accommodate their abilities each day. By lowering the start-up energy required to paint,
our group hopes to allow the client to paint more consistently.

During discussion and evaluation, we believed a full-rounded and ideal solution would incorporate
the best design elements of all the prototypes. Ideally, we would like to combine the use of an
adjustable easel and a sliding arm rest technique. Each design provides its obstacles however,
we found that the clamping mechanism for the Support N’ Slide can be replaced.

Kevin’s movable easel
• Need to ensure it is intuitive to adjust and easy to adjust
• Make sure it fits in her limited studio space

Emilia’s support and slide

• Only works on vertical axis, limited horizontal range, must unclamp and reclamp each time
she wants to change the horizontal axis
• Needs to be stable
• Need to change size depending on canvas size

Kevin’s movable easel

Spring potentially misfires and harms the client?

Wouldn’t be so strong to overcome gravity
Would be properly secured

Lots of moving parts

Add stickers to show what could be moved and how it moves
Like IKEA instructions

Emilia’s support and slide

26 Project-4
ENGINEER 1P13 – Project Four: Power in Community

Lots of wrist support – not entire arm

Add support for elbow

How portable?
Clamp can be removed and re-clamped to canvas
Clamp must be large enough for a canvas

Clamp makes it difficult for client to place it on canvas?

Alternative designs for clamp to make it more easily adjustable

Kyle’s Scissor lift arm support

Buttons are great for controlling movement
