MILESTONE 2 (STAGE 3) – SELECTION OF TOP
OBJECTIVES FOR A TURBINE BLADE
Team Number: Tues-27

List the top three objectives of a turbine blade for your assigned engineering
scenario
1: Economical
2: Easy to install
3: Generate electricity efficiently

Include a rationale for selecting each of these objectives

→ Write maximum 100 words for each objective
Objective 1: Economical
Rationale: The wind turbine is being designed to be used by an average homeowner. It is
important for the turbine to be inexpensive enough that it is appealing for consumers to
purchase. The net cost of operation must also be less than the current prices for electricity to
entice consumers to install this device. Both initial costs and operational costs are major
concerns for people looking to install auxiliary power generation devices.

Objective 2: Easy to install

Rationale: The idea of an easy installation ties into the idea of consumer appeal. As the wind
turbine blade is being designed for the average consumer, it must be designed with the intent
of a pleasant user experience. A difficult installation would make the product almost
impossible to sell to the average consumer, so a machine with an easy installation process is
crucial to the manufacturing process. Aside from the electricity generation itself, the easy
installation is arguably the most important feature of the finished product.

Objective 3: Generate electricity efficiently

Rationale: Since there is not an abundant amount of wind energy for the homeowner, the
turbine should extract the maximum amount of electricity possible from the wind available.
Using optimal blade geometry and low inertia is key, as it is these factors that allow for the

wind turbine blade to operate at an efficient rate, producing high quantities of energy
needed to help supplement the homeowner's electricity sources.
