Republic Act 8293, section 176 states that: No copyright shall subsist in any work
of the Government of the Philippines. However, prior approval of the government agency or
office wherein the work is created shall be necessary for exploitation of such work for profit.
Such agency or office may, among other things, impose as a condition the payment of
royalties.
Borrowed materials (i.e., songs, stories, poems, pictures, photos, brand names,

Every effort has been exerted to locate and seek permission to use these materials from
their respective copyright owners. The publisher and authors do not represent nor claim
ownership over them.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:
1. cite benefits of research; and
2. specify beneficiaries of research.
Introduction
As a high school student, the research journey allows for a wider
educational experience where you are able to discover the effects of
applying new thought processes through study and testing. You will be able
to use that experience to see the practical application of research projects
and explore its potentialities and benefits to society.
According to Mary-Louise Kearney, Director of the UNESCO Forum
on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge, knowledge generated by
research is the basis of sustainable development, which requires that
knowledge be placed at the service of development, be converted into
applications, and be shared to ensure widespread benefits. You’ll use them
in your life to become a productive citizen in the future.

Guide Questions:
A. Benefits of Research
Research is required not just for students and academics, but for all
professionals and non-professionals alike. These are the benefits of research
according to Zarah (2020):
1. A Tool for Building Knowledge and to Support the Truth
For non-professionals who value learning, doing research equips them
with knowledge about the world and skills to survive and improve their lives.
Among professionals and scribes, on the other hand, finding an interesting
topic to discuss and/or to write about should go beyond personal
experience. Determining either what the general public may want to know or
what researchers want others to realize or to think about can serve as a
reason to do research. Thus, research is an essential component in
generating knowledge and vice-versa. Moreover, this is for fact-checking to
know the truth as this is integral to the process of research, for it is fueled
by an inquisitive and critical mind.
2. Means to Understand Various Issues and Increase Public Awareness
As Freedman discoursed in "The Importance of Research for ICT
4
Teachers" (2011), "Research can shed light on issues we didn’t even know
existed, and can raise questions we hadn’t realized even needed asking."
Thus, almost all writers of imaginary tales and non-fictive accounts do
research, for doing so helps them create a good story and/or achieve strong
credibility.
5
B. Beneficiaries of Research
Researchers are encouraged to think about who will benefit from their
research especially when the research may involve or affect multiple
respondents or groups. Beneficiaries will depend upon the aim of the
research for the overall or specific context. The results of the research
will provide a huge contribution to research knowledge, economy,
individuals, and humanity.
1. Society and its People
According to Australian Research Council, (2017) the society
and its people can gain a lot from research which include better
products, better services, healthier lives, better welfare, as well as
increased understanding of ideas and attitudes, values and beliefs,
and so on.
2. Teachers and the Students
Rebecca Austin (2020) , author of Researching Primary
Education and Senior Lecturer at the School of Teacher Education
and Development at Canterbury Christchurch University, highlights
what the benefits are of research to the teachers which include:
a.) help find solutions to particular problems arising in the
classroom or school;
b.) connect you with sources of information and networks of
professional support; and
c.) clarify purposes, processes and priorities when introducing
change – for example, to curriculum, pedagogy or
assessment.
On the other hand, according to the University of San Diego
(2020), students as beneficiaries of research can gain the following
benefits that include:
a.) fostering critical thinking and analytical skills through
hands-on learning;
b.) defining academic, career and personal interests;
c.) expanding knowledge and understanding of a chosen field
outside of the classroom;
d.) developing one-on-one connections with distinguished
faculty in their field; and
e.) building community with peers, faculty and organizations
on- and off-campus.

You just learned about the details on the benefits and
beneficiaries of research. Now, it is time for you to
check your understanding about the topic.
Best of luck!
(Activity 3) ON MY OWN
Instruction: Read the following qualitative research abstract and cite its
benefits and beneficiaries.
Rice-fish farming is widely practiced all over the world, but since
some areas lack irrigation, diesel pumps are often needed. Solar-
powered irrigation systems (SPIS) are considered to be a more
sustainable option than traditional pumps, but are more costly to set
up, limiting their use to direct rice irrigation. This study intended to
integrate solar-powered pumps in the irrigation system and investigate
its viability through the following: establish an appropriate motor size,
determine solar panel tilt, and compare with traditional irrigation
pumping. The system was comprised of a positive displacement-type
solar pump, photovoltaic panels, a charge controller, a battery, and an
elevated, lined water impounding system for aquaculture. Tilt angles
varying between 5 and 10 degrees were tested by measuring the current
drawn from the photovoltaic panels. Three motor sizes were used and
compared based on flow rate and volume of water pumped per full
100Ah battery, and the effect of the water impounding system along
with raising tilapia on the growth of rice was determined. Results
revealed that a 200-watt motor pumps the most water per full battery
charge, and that the monthly computed panel tilt had the highest
harvested energy. Furthermore, solar-powered rice-fish culture gave a
higher yield compared to traditional diesel-pump irrigation, and
calculations on the system’s economic feasibility show a benefit cost
ratio of 1.26 and a payback period of 2.87 years.
