CHAPTER 3: The Laws of Thermodynamics

ACTIVITY:
Pour a hot water in Glass A and pour cold water in glass B. Leave the two glasses of water
on the table for a few hours.

ANALYSIS:
1. What happened to the temperature of the two glasses of water?
The hotter glass attains the temperature first. In glass with cold water the
molecules of water are tightly packed, but in glass with hot water the molecules of water
are loosely packed and free moving.

2. Why it happens?
Because when room temperature in cold water air molecules collides with glass
surface, the subsequent water molecules get warmer and process goes on with thermal
conductivity. While in glass of hot water, when the room temperature air molecules
collides with glass surface, the subsequent water molecules get cooler and it moves to
bottom pushing hot molecules to top, making whole glass cool fast.

APPLICATION:

What would be an example of something a thermodynamics engineer would do in the

aeronautics industry?
A thermodynamics engineer applies theories of heat and energy transfer to create practical
solutions to technical problems. They are responsible for the design, development and testing of
products and machinery. So, thermodynamics engineer would do the testing in the fuel efficiency
of a jet engine in aeronautics industry.

ASSESSMENT

Explain the relationship of thermal equilibrium to the zeroth law of thermodynamics?

The zeroth law of thermodynamics tells about the system is in thermal equilibrium. For a
system should be thermodynamic equilibrium it must be satisfy the thermal equilibrium. So, there’s
no zeroth law of thermodynamics without thermal equilibrium, because thermal equilibrium
temperature not change they are equal.
