Summary:
The dramatic effect of the Philippine economy occurred in the year 2020
due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Around 10.9 million Filipino workers lost
their jobs and had lower incomes and working hours. Unemployment and
underemployment had a more significant impact on the breakdown in the
Philippine economy. According to a labor report, it showed that two thirds
or 7.2 million of the 10.9 million vulnerable Filipino workers might be
"displaced" as the Philippines shifts towards online. The International
Labor Organization (ILO) said in a report that "The impact of the crisis has
been far-reaching, with underemployment surging as millions of workers
are asked to work reduced hours or no hours at all." High-risk sectors with
most displacements include manufacturing, transportation and storage,
accommodation and food service activities, as well as arts, entertainment,
and recreation. Since the vaccine has not yet been distributed to the
people, the employment recovery will take some time, according to
Christian Viegelahn, a senior economist at ILO Asia-Pacific. He added that
the bounce-back of the tourist-heavy economies like the Philippines would
depend on travelers' confidence, connected to vaccination. The Official
unemployment data in the Philippines reported that 3.8 million Filipinos are
jobless as of October, on the back of persisting effects of the pandemic.
With this economic breakdown, unemployed people might be added to the
number of poverty in the country. According to Sara Elder, another senior
economist at the ILO Asia-Pacific, the Philippines must invest more in
social protection, employment programs, and services to help job seekers
recover from the economy's breakdown.
Comment what you have learned from the article.
I learned that the pandemic has greatly affected us in our personal health,
economy, and everyday living. Many businesses and companies have
been closed down and fired all their employees to prevent the covid-19
from spreading as we're not aware of how fast the disease will spread. Due
to this, the number of unemployed and underemployed increased, and
even the number of poverty. People relied on any job for them to survive in
this crisis. People mostly relied on online businesses. People sell foods,
clothes, and others. But the worst is that the jeepney drivers, bus drivers,
tricycles, and alike have been stopped from their service. They are one of
the people with low salaries just only for their everyday needs. The photo is
shown in the article that the jeepney drivers were begging for money. It is
unfortunate that we lacked alertness and finding solutions in this pandemic;
that is why everything were affected. People might die not just from the
Covid-19 itself, but from hunger as our primary necessities are also
suffering from scarcity.
