L1: Assignment
NOTE: Please bold all your responses so nothing is missed when your work is assessed.
My ideal job, which is what I am set to pursue a master’s degree in starting this fall is in
Speech Language Pathology, so I aim to be a Speech Therapist
The job I aim to have is to be a speech therapist for school-aged children. This
would include students who are students enrolled in special education solely for speech
therapy, as well as students who are enrolled in special education programs which include
speech therapy. I love working with children, so this came naturally as a desire for my
career. The major responsibility is to ensure that students who are in need of speech
therapy are given therapy in which they are assisted to be able to speak to the best of their
abilities. In my free time, as I will most likely have weekends and summers off, I want to
pick up part time hours in hospitals and other health-care facilities, since the need for
speech therapists is always there, even if it wouldn’t be full time in these facilities.
I am intrigued by this line of work since it was actually my original major when I
was a new freshman at a local university almost five or six years ago now, but after
exploring multiple other fields involved in the school-world, I came back to wanting to
study SLP. Language and the development of human communication is something I have
an intense interest in, so being able to assist children and others in need of SLP therapy is
something I want to do. Speech communication is the main way in which humans
communicate, so it’s perhaps the most important skill for individuals to be proficient in in
order to be productive members of society.
I am not currently open to exploring other education-related job. However, if this
question was asked of me a year ago, I would’ve given a different answer, as only within
the last year had I decided that this was the pathway I wanted to follow. I knew I wanted to
assist people in learning, so teaching seemed like the fool-proof option, but after further
consideration, I wanted to pursue a different avenue of education assistance. With that
being said though, the first certification I want to obtain for SLPs is in Child-Language
(BCS-CL), since I aim to be working mainly with children.
Upon graduation from ASU, it is my goal to be a
Student who can take full advantage of the month period he has off from school in
between graduating ASU and starting his master’s program in SLP.

Through this job search, what new insights did you gain about: a) the responsibilities of your
future target profession, b) the required qualifications, c) your fit for this profession, and d)
whether or not you are on track for success?? (25-50 words) (4 pts)
I did not really learn anything new about this future target profession, as I had heavily
researched it prior to this assignment. I am on track, however, for success!
Research the competencies, certifications, and/or endorsing agencies of your career trajectory of
choice. Be comprehensive in your response. Record your research in the table below.

setting.
While I have had this plan in my mind for some while now, I still needed to research
certain aspects of the job that I plan to take on in the future. I know about which direction I
wanted to head in, as far as specifics about the job, so to be able to actually have a clear set task
list of how to achieve that is definitely helpful. The entry level requirements is something that I
was aware of, as I knowingly was going to have to pursue my master’s degree in speech-
language pathology, in addition to receiving accreditation from the state I plan on settling down
in and practicing speech-language pathology in. However, what was new to me was how much
would have to go into becoming accredited by the state of my choosing. For instance, I didn’t
realize that there was a Praxis exam specifically for speech-language pathology (How To
Become a Speech-Language Pathologist, n.d.).
In regards to the basic responsibilities, I felt as though I had a good understanding of that.
For the last few years or so, I try to watch YouTube videos here and there of actual speech
pathologists working on the job, as well some speech pathologists just talking about their general
work-day and what specific details they were able to share within their videos. For example,
Faye Miah is a somewhat popular YouTuber who is also a speech-language pathologist who has
a fairly detailed video about her life as a speech-language pathologist (Miah, 2019).
Professional development is something that a speech pathologist may pursue, but it is not
necessarily a requirement to be a practicing speech-pathologist, as most accreditations require at
least five years of practice within the specific field in order to become accredited (7 Speech
Pathology Certifications, 2021). Becoming further certified in specific fields is something that
should definitely be considered, though, as it would clearly make a speech-pathologist a more
desirable hire.
Besides getting my bachelor’s degree at ASU, which will allow me to pursue my
master’s degree, I am also looking for ASL courses, which would definitely help make me more
desirable of a hire, especially within cases in which a patient may be completely non-verbal. I
also am heavily weighing the options of which certifications I want to pursue first, most likely
those involving working with children as I want to end up in a school system.

Explain how the five specific 21st Century skills you explored above will support you in your
future target job. Using APA conventions, cite information from the 3 readings/videos from this
unit and 1 outside reading/video. Include the resources in the reference list below. The first
sentence is written for you. 300-400 words (10 pts)
The five 21st century skills I noted as especially important in my role as ______ include...
Creativity and Innovation
Learning to Learn/Metacognition
Communication
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
Flexibility
In nearly any job within the 21st century, there’s a skillset that sets apart those who get the
job from those who aren’t as likely to get the job. While the obvious skillset includes a solid
and full understanding of technology, and how to adapt and include new technologies as
they improve (Boss, 2019), more basic skills exist which can help benefit those within the
working world. In my own personal opinion, the five skills I believe are the best for me to
focus on within my desired profession of a speech-pathologist are as follow; creativity and
innovation, learning to learn/metacognition, communication, critical thinking and problem
solving, and finally flexibility (University of Melbourne, 2012), (BattelleforKids, 2019).
Within my specific profession, I plan on dealing with children who are in need of speech
therapy. This, in turn translates to numerous different patients all with different needs and
levels of proficiency. In order to ensure I provide the best therapy, I will need to be creative
and innovative with my planning, as well as taking advantage of my critical thinking and
problem solving skills. Furthermore, I will need to fully understand learning to learn and
metacognition, especially in regards to how young minds work. Where communication
comes into play is when I will have to report (in an easy to understand way) their progress
to their parents or the party responsible for communicating with their parents. Finally, I
also want to be flexible within my own schedule, as I’d like to also try to practice within a
medical setting. The more experience I can get within different settings of speech therapy,
the more desirable of a potential hire I could be for jobs within settings that are a bit more
competitive. Overall, I feel as though the most important skill I will have to focus on is
critical thinking and problem solving, due to the nature of “fixing things” within therapy.
