In speech of former president Corazon Aquino, September 18, 1986, Corazon

Aquino begins with the speech speaking of her husband’s death. Ninoy Aquino’s death

describes as the nation’s pleasing sacrifice that answered their prayers for freedom.

Continuing her speech, the sufferings of Ninoy Aquino was told. For 43 days Ninoy

Aquino had suffered terror and indignities. Ninoy Aquino had to continue the challenges

had put on me, overcoming it. Also, Former President Corazon Aquino said “ But his

death was my country’s resurrection in the courage and faith by which alone they could

be free again. The dictator had called him a nobody. Two million people threw aside

their passivity and escorted him to his grave. And so, began the revolution that has

brought me to democracy’s most famous home, the Congress of the United States.”

According to Archibald Macleish, stated by former President Corazon Aquino on

her speech, democracy must be defended by arms when it is attacked by arms and by

truth when it is attacked by lies. However, Corazon Aquino stated that “He failed to say

how it shall be won” seeing the hole in Archibald’s statements. Democracy has fallen to

her hands as she said. She stated, “The people vindicated me in an election shamefully

marked by government thuggery and fraud. The opposition swept the elections,

garnering a clear majority of the votes, even if they ended up, thanks to a corrupt

Commission on Elections, with barely a third of the seats in parliament. Now, I knew our

power.” She stated that corruption was experienced by her. She described the nation

as “You saw a nation, armed with courage and integrity, stand fast by democracy

against threats and corruption.” She challenges the dictatorship, according to her, over

millions of signatures drafted to her. She obliged the request. She also stated what

sufferings she saw while the dictatorship was alive.

She stated that the revolution causes the Filipinos to gain their freedom.

Retaliation was led by Corazon Aquino, a significant historical event. Freeing from the

grasp of Martial Law. She stated that “And true to their word, when a handful of military

leaders declared themselves against the dictatorship, the people rallied to their

protection.” Freedom was tasted when Corazon Aquino sat down on presidency. She

also compare herself to the former President of the United States, stating “Like Lincoln,

I understand that force may be necessary before mercy. Like Lincoln, I don’t relish it.

Yet, I will do whatever it takes to defend the integrity and freedom of my country.”

Corazon Aquino also stated the debt of the Filipinos caused by former President

Marcos. “Finally, may I turn to that other slavery: our $26 billion foreign debt. I have said

that we shall honor it.” She stated. The country, on that time, was facing an economic

deterioration feeding the communists insurgency, she said. Unfortunately, the problem

that arises was the economy of the Philippines, she stated “Half our export earnings, $2

billion out of $4 billion, which was all we could earn in the restrictive markets of the

world, went to pay just the interest on a debt whose benefit the Filipino people never

received.”

Lastly, I find it that she was sided to the Americans. Her examples, Abraham

Lincoln and Archibald Macleish is an American. She also tackled what the Americans

said about the revolution. She stated that “The distinguished co-chairman of the United

States observer team in his report to your President described that victory:
“I was witness to an extraordinary manifestation of democracy on the part of the

Filipino people. The ultimate result was the election of Mrs. Corazon C. Aquino

as President and Mr. Salvador Laurel as Vice-President of the Philippines.”

Former President Corazon Aquino thanked the Americans, stating, “Three years

ago, I said thank you, America, for the haven from oppression, and the home you gave

Ninoy, myself and our children, and for the three happiest years of our lives together.

Today, I say, join us, America, as we build a new home for democracy, another haven

for the oppressed, so it may stand as a shining testament of our two nation’s

commitment to freedom.” That statement also clears that the Americans helps us, as

what she sees.
