• Maria Corazon Cojuanco Aquino was born
on January 25, 1933 in Tarlac.
• She was born into a wealthy, politically
prominent family based in Tarlac.
• She graduated from Mount St. Vincent
College in New York City in 1954 but
abandoned further studies in 1955 to marry
Benigno Simeon Aquino Jr., who was then a
promising young politician.
• Corazon remained in the background during
her husband’s career, rearing their five
children at home.
• Her husband, who had become a prominent
opposition politician, was jailed by Marcos
for eight years (1972-1980), and Corazon
accompanied him into exhile in the United
States in 1980.

• Benigno was assassinated upon his return


to the Philippines in August 1980.

• This event galvanized opposition to the


Marcos Government
• EDSA People Power Revolution of 1986
was widely recognized arounf the world
for its peaceful character.
• The Marcos regime greatly suffered a
crisis of legitimacy after the assassination
of Benigno Aquino Jr.
• He called for Snap Election in February
1986, where Corazon Aquino was
convinced to run against Marcos.
• The canvassing was rigged to Marcos’
favor but the people expressed their
protests against the corrupt and
authoritarian government
• Leading military officials of the regime
and Martial Law orchestrators
themselves, Juan Ponce Enrile and Fidel V.
Ramos, plotted to take over presidency,
until civilians heeded the call of then
Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin and
other civilian leaders gather in EDSA.
• The overwhelming presence of civilians in
EDSA successfully turned a coup into
civilian demonstration.
• The thousands of people who gathered
overthrew Ferdinand Marcos from the
presidency after 21 years.
