1. What is the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication?

Provide Five an example in each kind.

Verbal Communication

Verbal Communication is a type of oral communication wherein the message is

communicated through speaking of words. The sender gives words and expressing the

own’s feelings, thoughts, ideas, and opinions.

I. Speeches

II. Songs

III. Discussions

IV. Poetry

V. Letters/Messages

Non-Verbal Communication

Non-Verbal Communication is the process of conveying meaning without the use of

words either written or spoken. In other words, any communication made between two

or more persons without the use of oral communication or speaking of words is Non-

Verbal Communication.

Example of Non-Verbal Communication:

I. Kinesics – Body Language

II. Proxemics – Language of Distance

IV. Chronemics – Language of Time

V. Paralanguage

2. What special factors influence the kind of register to be used? Why is there

a need to be mindful of these registers?

Three types of language register:

 Formal – this type of register is used in a professional context. It is highly

structured, impersonal, and more serious in this tone, vocabulary, and

grammar.

 Informal – Language is casual, personal, and more intimate in its tone, sentence

structure, and choice of words.

 Neutral – This is a more factual and non-emotional type of language register.

These registers are needed to in mind because they are what we should use

depending on a situation. We cannot use informal register in office works because

informal register would not fit in professionalism unlike how formal register would be.

These registers are important to know so that we can be more clear, correct, complete,

concrete, concise, consideration and courteous.

3. How can non-verbal cues contribute to communication breakdown?

(Breakdown is miscommunication among participants.)

A person’s non-verbal communication must match up with the context and tone

of what they are saying, or the interpreter may become confused and read the social

cues wrongly, thus resulting in a communication breakdown.

The message the sender is trying to give may be interpreted by another person

differently. It may also be due to the selective attention of the receiver. the person is

impatient and put his objective above all. He gives ears to only that part of the

information which is helpful for him and fulfills his objective and ignores all the other

aspects. One is silence, the receiver may think differently on what the sender conveyed.

Because of silence, there are different conclusion and different understanding would

come up.

It is important the Non-verbal communication is concise and clear.

4. Do you agree with the quotation” Action speaks louder than words”?

Explain.

“Actions speak louder than words” is an old-age proverb with a deep hidden

meaning.

I agree with the quotation because words are as shallow as a human can be, but

action can be deep as a human can be. We can see that actions are successfully giving

an evident result, on the other hand, words which are boastfully spoken would not give

results without the hands of action. Let us use an example, A husband may say “I love

you” to his wife every night, however, if he does not do anything to prove it or show it,

then his words become empty or meaningless.
