Science Lesson: Combining Matter (Part 1)

Goal: Students will learn how matter can interact and be combined to form different things.

Standards:

3.2.2.A4 - Experiment and explain what happens when two or more substances are combined
(e.g. mixing, dissolving, and separated (e.g. filtering, evaporation).

Objectives:

Students will observe that materials have different properties and provide evidence that
materials can be combined to form different things by building.

Content Information:

Matter: Anything that takes up space and has mass.

Property: Something about an object that you can observe with your senses

Combined Materials: Materials that come together to make something new.

Materials and Resources:

Building a Bridge Lab Sheet

Cardboard Tubes

Straws

Heavy Paper

Tape

Clay

Scissors

Pencil

Toy Car

Procedures:

1. The teachers will introduce the learning goal and the class will read it aloud together:

“I will learn how matter can be combined to form different things”

2. The teacher will show students photos of buildings and bridges

3. The teacher will engage the class in discussion about the variety of materials that are used
to create large structures (builidings, bridges, etc)

4. The students will discuss the physical properties of the structures

5. The teacher will introduce the experiment.

6. The students will complete number 1-4 on the Building a Bridge Lab Sheet

7. The students will build and test their bridges

8. Whole group - the class will discuss and complete numbers 5 and 6

9. The teacher will inform students that the lesson will be continued tomorrow and that we will
look deeper at the properties of different objects that can be combined to create new things.

Assessment:
The teacher will assess students as they are completing their Lab Sheet and building their
bridge. Students will demonstrate proficiency by completing the 6 out of 6 numbered pieces
within the lab sheet and building a bridge that can hold a car for 10 seconds.
