07. Protection of High Profile Individuals

STATEMENT:

Healthcare Facilities (HCFs) should have policies and procedures in place to provide enhanced
protective security measures for the presence of high-profile individuals on site. The protection
of confidential information, patient right to privacy and organizational reputation should be
considered as these policies and procedures are developed.

INTENT:
a. High profile individuals often include celebrities, political figures and other publicly
recognizable individuals, commonly referred to as VIPs. The protective measures involved
may also be utilized for those involved in high profile crimes including domestic violence.

b. HCFs should develop separate procedures addressing security needs of high- profile individuals
and include response measures to address related unplanned events.

c. Responsibilities for the safe management of high-profile individuals should be developed

based on a threat assessment. Safety and risk mitigation plans may include:
1) Parking and access/egress requirements to/from the HCF
2) Managing access to the individual and surrounding areas
3) Escorting the individual and associates
4) Responding to incidents related to the individual
5) Coordinating and liaising with law enforcement and personal security detail
6) Supporting media relations processes and internal communications
7) Protecting the privacy of the identity, location, and associated health information
