ASSIGNMENT IN TEACHING SCIENCE IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES

1. a. What is the performance of elementary science of the Philippines?

The implementation of the k to 12 basic education program does not bode well for
science education. Science education will start only at Grade 3, which is not comforting
for the improvement in basic science education. We need to develop critical thinking
skills of our Filipino students at an early age.( The Manila Times(2014) Science Education
Realities). According to the study of Antonion Batomalugue, the main factors which can
be cited to account for the low performance in science of Filipino student include the
lack of science culture and deficiences regarding the school curriculum the teaching
process,instructional materials and teacher training.

b Compared to other countries, what can you say about our status in science
performance in elementary level?

In Japan, students rank near top in global math and science survey(Eric Johnston). The
trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 Global study,
released by the International Association for Evaluation of Education Achievement
(IEA's) international study center at Boston College, saw japanese 4th grade elementary
students rank 3rd among 47 countries in Science. It is because japanese schools are
equipped with rich equipment for the purpose of assuring the opportunities of science
education for every student. On the other hand, Philippine ranks among lowest in
reading ,math and science in 2018 study based on the result of Programme for
International Student Assessment (PISA). The Philippines ranks low 70s in math and
science among 79 countries. There are problems that affect how public schools can
teach science to their study. The lack of classrooms limits the conduciveness of lectures
tk students, textbook and learning materials. The lack of laboratories also damages the
quality of education, that limits the teachers lectures and activities for students instead
of lab experiments that show how rhe the concepts work in real life.
2. Compare the elementary science programs of the Philippines with other countries
( one Asian and other Non-Asian country).
