USE OF THE TABLES ILLUSTRATED

Example 2: Find the Ascendant at a place on latitude 16 degree 43 min N. Longitude 74

degree 14 minute E. Time is 4.00 a.m. IST on 13th April 1908.
From the longitude of the place we find the correction to the IST
to obtain the local mean time (LMT) as
4 x (74 degree 14 min – 82 degree 30 min)= 4 x (- 8 degree 16
min of time) = -33 minute 4 sec
Hence LMT of the moment is 4 h 0 s (-) 33m 4s= 3h 26m 56 s
A.M.
From the above correction we also find the correction to the
sidereal time for the place as + 6 secs; which is at the rate of 1
sec per 6 mins of the above local time correction (with the sign
reversed) (pl refer Table III)
Had the required time been the LMT of the place, the above
correction would not at all have been necessary and we could
have proceeded with the time 4-00 am in ascertaining the sidereal
time of the moment.
Let us now find the sidereal time for the epoch
1 Sid. Time on April 13, noon ( Table I) = 1h 23m 57s
2 Correction for 1908 (Table II) (+) 0m 14s
3 Therefore, S.T. for April 13, 1908 ( noon) ( 1+2) = 1h 24m 11s
4 Correction for the place as obtained above (+) 0m 06s
5 Therefore, S.T. same date, noon of the place( 3+4) = 1h 24m 17s
6 The LMT is 3h 26m 56s A.M., which is 8 h 33m 4 s
before the noon of that date. This time interval
increased by 10 secs per hour (the correction given
in Table IV ) becomes 8h 33m 4s + 1 m 25 s = 8h
34m 29 s. (-) 8h 34m 29s
( Corrected time interval)
7 Therefore, Sid. Time for the epoch ( 5-6) { 25h 24 = 16h 49m 48s
m 17s – 8h 34m 29 s}
With this sidereal time we have to enter the table of ascendants
for the place. As the latitude of the place is 16 degree 43 min N ,
we shall have to make use of the table for lat. 17 degree 0 min N,
which is nearest to the latitude of the place.

8 For S.T. 16h 48m, the ascendant = 10s 14 d 38 m

9 Proportionate Variation for 1m 48 s + 33m
10 Hence for S.T. 16h 49m 48s, Ascendant (8+9) = 10s 15 d 11 m
11 Now, from the Ayanamsa correction for 1908 is (+) 0d 25m
12 Hence, the required Ascendant ( 10+11) = 10s 15 d 36 m
i.e, the Ascendant is Kumbha 15 degree 36 min
