LESSON PLAN:

Subject Areas: 6th Grade English Language Arts and 6th Grade Social Studies

Culture and Plot in Raya and The Last Dragon


Objectives:
- Students will be able to recognize cultural elements when displayed in a film.
- Students will be able to identify the components of The Hero’s Journey Plot Chart.
- Students will be able to complete The Hero’s Journey Plot Chart after viewing the video
clip.

Higher Order Thinking Questions:


1. What examples can you find that represent culture in this clip?
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of culture?
3. How are the cultural elements of this clip similar to those of our own cultures?
4. How would you portray your own culture in a short clip like this?

Lesson Plan:
1. The lesson will begin with an introduction of the standards that will be covered, which
Maria will do.
2. Maria will introduce the different learning objectives for the lesson.
3. Bailey will introduce higher order thinking questions for students to consider while
viewing the clip from Raya & The Last Dragon
4. A clip from the movie Raya & The Last Dragon will be played. Subtitles/closed captions
will be used when the clip is played so that students who may be HOH or have an
auditory processing disorder can follow along.
5. Nicole will explain the concept of the hero's journey and explain its importance in regards
to the cultural elements of Raya & The Last Dragon. Participants will review the different
stages of the hero’s journey.
6. Nicole will introduce the plot pyramid identification activity. Participants will be asked to
identify where this scene from Raya & The Last Dragon belongs on the Hero’s Journey.
7. Bailey will introduce the Cultural Group Research Project, where students will be placed
into small groups and work together. Students will be asked to identify and research a
specific cultural element about Raya & The Last Dragon.
8. Students will be asked to present their research to the class once their project is
completed.
Materials:
- Students will need access to a stable internet connection to work Zoom.
- Powerpoint Presentation

Activity:
- Plot Pyramid Identification and understanding where a scene would belong on the plot
structure. Prior to this activity, students will go over the different stages of the Hero’s
Journey so that they have a better understanding of it. Watching this scene, participants
will fill out a plot diagram of where this scene belongs on the Hero’s Journey
- Cultural Group Research and Presentations: Students will be put into groups of 4-5 and
asked to work together to research and identify one cultural element that was used as
inspiration for the movie Raya and The Last Dragon. Each group will be assigned one
specific element and will be asked to research this element (clothing, food, mythology,
etc). The groups will create a presentation based on their research to present to the class
when their research is complete.

Assessment:
- Assessment involves students/participants engaging in a small group discussion about the
cultural influences that is incorporated in the betrayal scene in Raya and the Last Dragon.
- Ability to recognize source material shows a deeper understanding of the movie’s theme
and background.
- Group Presentations show a deeper understanding of cultural values and what they might
represent across different regions of the world.

structure of a text and contributes to the development of the theme, setting, or plot.
- Social Studies
- 6.C.1.1 Analyze how cultural expressions reflected the values of civilizations, societies
and regions (e.g., oral traditions, art, dance, music, literature, and architecture).
