REFLECTION REPORT

NAME : 30

Name of the reporter: MILKY MAE B. OBERES

TOPIC : THE CARDINAL VALUES

A. SYNOPSIS
The cardinal virtues are the four principal moral virtues. The English word cardinal
comes from the Latin word cardo, which means "hinge." All other virtues hinge on these four:
prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. Plato first discussed the cardinal virtues in the
Republic, and they entered into Christian teaching by way of Plato's disciple Aristotle. Unlike the
theological virtues, which are the gifts of God through grace, the four cardinal virtues can be
practiced by anyone; thus, they represent the foundation of natural morality.
B. OBSERVATION/REFLECTION
The topic was very informative and interesting. The reporter starts with a bible verse that
can be seen in 2 Peter 1:5 says ‘For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith
virtue; and to virtue, knowledge;” It was very reflective for me as a person because it made me
realize for many of us, going about our daily lives can be difficult. We are constantly inundated
with situations where we must make decisions. If someone cuts us off on the freeway, we must
decide whether to ignore it and go about our day or lash out in anger. If we have a job, we
dislike but must continue to go to for the sake of family or financial stability. When we are faced
with challenges in life, we can develop a course of action that will hopefully lead us to the
desired outcome. Whenever we lie, cheat, steal, take the easy way out, or ignore others in need,
life is immediately easier for us. But after a while, these things weigh on our consciences. We
have the four cardinal virtues which are prudence, temperance, justice and fortitude. They are
important for living a moral life because they guide our intellect and our will in controlling our
passions and in making good moral choices based on reason and faith.
