Profession Profile #2 College Calculator & Scholarship Essay Harrison STEM Capstone

Introduction

College is expensive. Many of you may qualify for HOPE but statistics show that few of you will keep it. In fact, only
about 30% of students keep HOPE throughout their college career. Some of you may be going out of state to college so
HOPE is not an option. You may or may not get other scholarships, financial aid, or grants but because situations change,
it is important that you know and understand the cost for whomever is investing in you and your college tuition.

Procedure

Part I: College Cost Calculation Worksheet:

֍ Interns complete for ONLY ONE College, answer the analysis questions, then proceed to Part II
֍ Career Explorers complete for THREE different schools, answer the analysis questions, then proceed to Part II

Directions: Use this worksheet to compare the cost of attendance to 3 colleges of your choice. Of course, it is expected
that you will complete this for colleges you have been accepted to and/or applied to. DO NOT calculate in the HOPE
scholarship for any of the colleges even if you currently qualify!
Most of this information is available at each college website. Be sure to cite each source in the space provided below the
table!

If you plan to live off campus you may need to find a cost of living calculator for the area to estimate this
expense.

minimum of $600 to $800 regardless of any published amounts. It may be more for some courses of study (art,
lab courses, etc.)
6. Personal Expenses – This can be dependent upon your lifestyle, extracurricular interests and college location.
College estimates will help but include a minimum of $1,500 for full time study.

Essay Prompt:
Describe the three characteristics of leadership you value most.  Discuss why you believe that
these traits are so important and how you feel that they are developed in an individual.

In addition to the email, copy and paste your essay response below:

There are many things that make a person a leader. Leadership isn’t just the ability to guide people in a certain
direction, but better yet, the ability to help the people you are leading.
The first characteristic of a good leader is determination. When leading a group, I always try to map out
everything we need to do in order to accomplish our goals. I make sure that no one is procrastinating and that we get
the job done on time. The thing that helps me stay determined while in a group, is knowing that if somebody else
doesn’t do their work, it will reflect poorly against me.
The next characteristic that makes a good leader is knowledge. While a leader doesn’t have to be the smartest
person in the world, they do need to be knowledgeable in many ways. They need to know about what they are talking
about. A person can’t lead a group in marine biology if they don’t know what a fish is. A leader also needs to be
knowledgeable in who they’re working with. Knowing your workers/peers can help you figure out how to divide the
work. if you know one of your teammates is good at art, they could be in charge of graphics.
The final, and in my opinion the most important, characteristic of a good leader is the ability to connect with
your teammates. If you are mean to your teammates, they are not going to work as hard, and might end up resenting
you. By being a more approachable leader, the team will feel more comfortable voicing ideas and creativity will be at a
surplus. Once teammates are able to talk and there is no animosity, work will be the main focus, and there will be less
distractions and room for procrastination.
In my opinion, if somebody has all three of the traits above, they would make a great leader and would be very
proficient in their work.
