provide its customer engineering services starting at the early stages of the project.
Integrated Manufacturing and Design Advantages: AFIL has an added advantage of having
designing group along with manufacturing unit of FRP piping system. Having the design facility
in consultation with field services workforce, which monitor the installation of FRP piping
systems provides the feedback needed to improve the design and incorporate the difficulties
faced by customers, so as to have continuous improvement in design. Moreover, production
difficulties encountered along with effective quality system provides necessary input to design
so as to take into account the variations and make necessary changes to the FRP product design
to provide economical / reliable product which meets the customer requirement.

Having more than 25 years experiences in wide variety of FRP applications, AFIL can provide
the following list of Engineering Services to its customers.

2.1 Comprehensive Specification Writing / Review

Comprehensive Specification Writing / Review service for the FRP Piping System for different
applications and uses can be provided. This includes all critical points in the specifications in
such a way to ensure proper installation and service by the FRP piping system with economical
cost and highest degree of reliability. The process of involving the manufacturer in the early
stages of the project specification writing / review provides an additional strength and value to
the project specification from both quality and economic points of view.

At this stage, different alternatives for the specific project conditions can be provided with all
necessary requirements specified to achieve the best combinations of quality, reliability and
value. Special / unique cases applied to the specific project can be well specified to ensure
successful installation and service. AFIL unique long experience in the FRP piping business can
be of a high value to the customer when he want to utilize that experience for his project.

2.2 FRP Pipes and Fittings Design:

AFIL is capable of designing FRP Solid and Ribbed wall piping and fittings for Underground
(U/G), Aboveground (A/G) and Sub-aqueous piping systems based on various standards such as
ASTM, AWWA, BS, ASME. The design can be done using flexible coupling joint, rigid joint
systems or combination of both. U/G FRP pipe design calculations are carried out as per
AWWA C-950 and M 45. The pipe calculation generally covers live and dead loads effects on

the pipe in addition to the effect of internal pressure and vacuum level on the adequacy of the
pipe for buckling, combined strain levels, allowable stresses …etc.

Where as the fittings are designed based on the international standards such as ASME, NBS-PS-
15, and Swedish Standards etc.

2.3 Stress Analysis and Engineering Services:

AFIL can provide the customer with a full engineering package for FRP piping system. This
includes, but not limited to:

2.3.1 Stress Analysis

AFIL is equipped with latest version of stress analysis package CAESAR II

Complete Stress Analysis of the piping system using CAESAR II can be done. The result of
analysis will provide the customer with all required information / details and recommendation /
modification in any typical stress analysis project. AFIL’s rich experience in this field will help
in providing the customer with the most economical and cost effective design of the piping
system taking in to consideration all related project conditions. The analysis will also lead to use
of proper process and design details during manufacturing and installation. Doing such analysis
could be essential to the success of the project. The analysis could be limited to Static Load
Cases, or it can be extended to involve Dynamic, Structural and Equipment analysis using
International Piping Standards. The analysis can also be extended to Hydrodynamic Loading for
offshore applications

Till now AFIL carried out stress analysis for more than 25 projects ranging up to 3500 mm
diameter above ground piping. Typical details and projects list can be provided upon request.

2.3.2 Engineering Drawings:

AFIL is equipped with the latest versions of the following CAD software.

AutoCAD.
Micro Station
CADWrox
In general following type of drawings / designs are being prepared:

a) Lay out Drawings.

b) Isometric Drawings.
c) Shop Drawings for Spools.
d) Detailed Valve Chamber Design Drawings.
e) Tanks / Manholes / Inspection Chambers Drawings.
f) Detailed Fabrication and Process Drawings.
g) Stress Isometrics.
h) Detailed Support Design Drawings.

i) Installation Details Drawings.
j) Hydro Test Circuit Diagrams, …etc.

AFIL can provide complete engineering CAD isometric and shop drawings fully detailed and
integrated to be used by the manufacturer during fabrication and quality control inspection
activities and the owner during inspection, installation and as a reference for documentation. The
contractor can also use these drawings as installation drawings. Such drawings can be used at
any stage during or after project execution. This will result in cost savings for all parties
involved and eliminate any change of miscommunication or lack of detail. Interface of Stress
Analysis Package, Hydraulic Analysis Package and CAD Package provides additional flexibility
in preparing and integrating analysis and engineering drawings.

AFIL uses its own LISP based programs for fast generation of Shop drawings along with
necessary details. More over CADWrox program enhances the drafting capability to generate
fast layouts along with stress isometrics.

In addition to that, AFIL can accept any drawings from customers in any format, and it can
provide drawings to customer in electronic format required.

Various wide varieties of drawings are carried out by AFIL, typical drawings can be provided up
on request.

2.3.3 Hydraulic and Surge Analysis and Design:

AFIL can provide flow calculations for fixed size piping network, design the piping size in the
network based on limiting head loss or maximum allowable velocity, and surge analysis to
accurately simulate the fluid flow through a network of pipes and other components. Latest
Versions of the Following software is available with AFIL

PIPENET software (STANDARD Module)

PIPENET software (TRANSIT Module)

With PIPENET software, the following analysis for the piping network can be done:

a) Pipe Sizing Design: Based on the required discharges the pipe seizing of complicated
piping system can be carried out for finalizing the required diameter.

b) Head Loss Calculations: In any complicated circuits head losses occurring in the system
can be analyzed and total drop in pressure can be obtained at various outlets, thus paving
the way for finalizing the hydraulic requirements.

c) Water Hammer / Surge Analysis: The water hammer and surge analysis can be carried out
to find out the effect of sudden activation and deactivation of valves.

2.3.4 Special Engineering Designs:

Visit our web sites: www.afilpipe.com www.amianit.com; www.flowtite.com

Special Engineered Design Services using AFIL FRP products can be provided. Engineering
designs for the following are few typical examples:

a) FRP Intake header structure for sub-aqueous installation.

b) High velocity spools.
c) Carrier piping inside non-FRP sleeves.
d) Special joint designs with other piping system.
e) Complete FRP Chlorination Piping System inside Sea Water Intake (SWI) Header.
f) Aboveground FRP Pipe supports.
g) FRP pipe installation in unstable soil conditions.

Details of such special designs can be provided as needed.

2.4 Engineering Solutions For Unique Applications

AFIL can provide solutions and technical advises to the customer to solve special / critical cases,
which may arise in FRP piping system. In most piping systems, unique cases that require
engineering consultancy may arise.

Experience in dealing with unique cases is crucial to find the most suitable and economical
solution that ensures proper design details and proper performance of the piping system.
Properly dealing with such cases in the project ensures free of maintenance or modification for
the piping system.

2.5 Finite Element Analysis:

AFIL is equipped with latest version of ANSYS to do the FEA as needed.

Many a times in a project it needs to study the critical areas for further investigations of buckling
analysis and stress analysis in detail. This is due fact that CAESAR II stress analysis provide
over all behavior of the system, rather that particular area in detail behavior. Details of the
projects carried out using ANSYS can be provided if needed.

2.6 Field Services:

With AFIL qualified long experienced field representative staff (Field Department) & support
from the plant departments, AFIL can provide its customers field services that can be extended
to full supervision of all types of FRP installation.

Above summarizes the capability of the AFIL, in brief, but till now AFIL has engineering,
produced more than 6000 km of FRP piping and is being installed worldwide.
