2. Creativity: Innovation and Invention- Use imagination and creativity to interact with objects and
materials.

Instructional objectives: list 2- 3 observable/measurable objectives for this lesson. Use precise language w/ action verbs.
The student will:
1. develop an awareness of materials found in the environment by sculpting using soil, clay,
and sand.
2. develop their imagination and creativity by interacting with soil, clay, and sand and using
different digging and sculpting tools.
3. be learning about materials inside and outside of their classroom environment by interacting
with materials such as pine cones, leaves, rocks, sticks, marbles, pencils/paper, etc.
Experience(s): Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Include a step-by-step walk through of the experience. Experiences will encourage
experimentation, use of creativity, problem solving and language development. Experiences will directly relate to the learning
objectives and ELDS. How will the experience(s) inform you on the children’s prior knowledge and interest in the topic? How
will you ensure your learning objectives and assessment strategies align?
Materials:
- Soil, clay, sand, water, digging tools, sculpting tools, everyday objects found in the classroom/
outside (i.e. pine cones, leaves, rocks, sticks, marbles, pencils/paper, etc.)
Step-by-step Method:
1. Have materials of soil, clay, sand, water, digging/sculpting tools on the tables/around the classroom
(spread out so children can switch stations/materials frequently)
2. Tell students that they can build/sculpt anything they want with the materials they have thus far
3. Encourage students to switch stations and materials frequently/combine materials if allowed
4. After (a set time) tell students they may begin incorporating other materials found around the
classroom into their sculptures
5. During recess time or continued on a new school day, encourage students to either bring their
materials outside or find new materials outside to incorporate into what they are building
6. Throughout the lesson, encourage students to work together and collaborate with one another
Questions:
How will the experience(s) inform you on the children’s prior knowledge and interest in the topic?
How will you ensure your learning objectives and assessment strategies align?
- This experience will inform me on the children’s prior knowledge with their concepts of common
materials and how they work together, integrating new materials into their prior building
experiences, and communication/language skills with peers
- To ensure my learning objectives and assessment strategies align, I am focusing on simple materials
and procedures with process-based/formative assessment to ensure I do not hinder the student’s
creative thinking
