Effects of Early Marriage

Despite the fact that early marriage has been a disgusting habit adopted by society for

almost hundred years, since the beginning of the 21th century It has become an obstacle to

teenagers' rights and needs. Many governments and countries are already taking an active role in

this matter. Even though serious health problems, early marriage has much more harmful effects

than that. This idea is based on the fact that it is unfair to one of the parties, and is especially

supported by the fact that in many countries early marriage is banned. “Nine of the ten countries

with the highest rates of child marriage are considered fragile."(Boender,2016, p.5). This essay

discusses the Both health and psychological effects, in addition to social effects of early

marriage.

One of the most important effects of early marriage is considering it as the biggest

contributor to the decline in the status of women in society. Kamel (2020) has reported that

Many societies reject the idea of a married girl going to school, or the husband may be the party

that refuses his wife to attend school (p.3). on the other hand, the failure to obtain a complete

education like other individuals will bring many difficulties to her life other than that it basically

limits her chance to develop as an independent individual. For example: after getting married or

having a child, many girls want to return to school to further their education, but most schools

will not allow a girl with such a situation. These young mothers have to work to support their

families, but they are unable to do so as they've been denied an education and are thus

unqualified for the majority of jobs available in their area. For this reason, any violence would

only be acceptable in order to meet her most basic needs.

Health and psychological effects

Another effect is medical problems, which lead to an increased mortality rate in many

cities around the world. In research from Asaad (2015) he pointed out that Childbearing at a

young age has a wide range of consequences, including an incomplete length of the gland

responsible for height, a greater risk of miscarriage and preeclampsia, and an incomplete

development of the pelvis, which exposes the mother to the risks of cesarean delivery, as well as

the risk of contracting the acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS). Besides, Girls who marry

as children are at risk of many psychological problems, including disorders that are based on the

trauma that you were exposed to. As a result, lot of them fall prey to depression, anxiety and

phobia.

To sum up, while many do not oppose the idea of early marriage, the serious effects must

be considered, particularly in terms of health and psychological effects, and also the rise in

illiteracy rates in those areas. I myself believe that it should be considered as a crime all over the

world as no one has the right to make a child suffer. If only government invest in specialized

centers to reduce this problem in our society. Moreover, the role of the family has a great

influence that can prevent this from happening and prevent it from spreading in society.
