ME 6703 COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS

ANSWER KEY – IAT 1

1. Define CAD list the fundamental reasons for implementing CAD
Computer-aided design (CAD) is defined as any design activity that involves the effective
use of the computer to create, modify, analyze, or document an engineering design.
 To increase the productivity of the designer.
 To improve the quality of the design,
 To improve design documentation.
 To create a manufacturing data base.
2.ACTIVITIES OF CAD
 Geometric modelling
 Engineering Analysis.
 Design Evaluation and Review.
 Automated Drafting.
2. List out types of production system
Job shop, mass, control, batch production.
3. Explain the scope of CAD/CAM and CIM

4. Define production rate and operating cycle time

Hourly rate of the product.
Parts spends at the machine .
5. Define concurrent engineering
Concurrent engineering refers to an approach used in product development in which
the functions of design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and other functions
are integrated to reduce the elapsed time required to bring a new product to market.
Also called simultaneous engineering
6. List out the elements of automated systems.
(1) power to accomplish the process and operate the system. (2) a program of
instructions to direct the process, and (3) a control system to actuate the
instructions
7. what is the philosophy of JIT
It is a management philosophy that strives to eliminate sources of manufacturing
waste by producing right part in the right place at the right time.
8. Differentiate Closed loop and open loop.
A closed loop control system, also known as a feedback control system. is one in
which the output variable is compared with an input parameter, and any difference
between the two is used to drive the output into agreement with the input
A open loop system which operates without feed back system and less in maintanence
9. What is lean production.
Reducing all forms of wastages in manufacturing industry

PART – B
10. A)i) Just-in-time (JIT) production systems were developed in Japan to minimize
inventories, especially WIP. WIP and other types of inventory are seen by the
Japanese as waste that should be minimized or eliminated,
Objectives
Zero defect, set up time, inventories, handling , breakdown, lead time ,and lot size of
one
Elements:
Reduce setup times, reduce manufacturing lot sizes, reduce lead time, preventive
maintenance, flexible work force.
A)ii )Explain concurrent engineering
CONCURRENT ENGINEERING
Concurrent engineering refers to an approach used in product development in which
the functions of design engineering, manufacturing engineering, and other functions
are integrated to reduce the elapsed time required to bring a new product to market.
Also called simultaneous engineering

Concurrent engineering brings together a wide spectrum of people from several

functional areas in design and manufacturing of a product ,representatives from
R&D ,engineering, manufacturing materials management, quality assurance and
marketing etc ,develop the product as a team . Everyone interacts with each other
from the start and they perform their tasks in Parallel. The team review the design
from the point of view of marketing ,process , Operation facility ,capacity planning
,design for manufacturability, assembly testing and maintenance etc. As the design is
evolved.
10.a)ii)The capacity of the machine can be determined using the assumed 80-hr week as
follows:
PC = 80(20) = 1600 unit/wk
(b) Utilization can be determined as the ratio of the number of parts made by the machine
relative to its capacity.
U = 1000/1600 = 0.625 (62.5%) (8)
a.i)Explain the integration of CAD/CAM
Computer integrated manufacturing includes all of the engineering functions of CAD/CAM,
but it also includes the firm's business functions that are related to manufacturing. The ideal
CIM system applies computer and communications technology to all of the operational
functions and information processing functions in manufacturing from order receipt, through
design and production, to product shipment.

11. CIM Wheel and Explain the computerized elements of CIM Systems

CIM includes all the engineering functions of CAD/CAM but also includes the business
functions of the firm as well.
11.b.(i) Lean production can he defined as an adaptation of mass production in which
workers and work cells are made more flexible and efficient by adopting methods that
reduce waste in all forms lean production is based on four principles
1. Minimize waste
2. Perfect first-time quality
3. Flexible production lines
4. Continuous improvement
Lean tools:
Pull system, kanban, work cells, TPM, TQM, quick changeover, 5S, concurrent
engineering
(ii)Automation and Explain the levels of automation
Automation
Automation is the technology by which a process or procedure is accomplished
without human assistance. It is implemented using a program of instructions
combined with a control system that executes the instructions
