UNIT 9: PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT
SKILL: WRITING
I. Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify and understand some vocabulary related to the topic “Preserving The Environment”:
“Consumption, Rinse, Unplug, Absorbing, Facility, Deforestation”
- Understand some environmental problems.
- Apply the writing skills to give some practical advice on how to to preserve the environment.
II. Time: 90 minutes
III. Teaching materials: Textbook, PowerPoint slides, lesson plan.
IV. Anticipated problems:
- Technical problems.
- Ss are distracted or don’t keep up with the T.
- Some weak students may not be able to answer the questions.
Expected solutions:
- Have a contingency plan if there are any technical problems.
- Stop talking and invite Ss to join the activities.
- Make it easy for everybody to understand, take it slow but not at a fast pace so the teacher can cover the
important details in the amount of time.

Activity 1: “LOOK AT THE PICTURE”

- Let Ss look at the picture about the water consumption and


answer some questions:
+ What do you see in this picture?
(A person is turning off the tap while brushing teeth.)
+ What does the text in the picture mean?
(It means you should save water and use water appropriately.)
+ Do you turn off the tap while brushing your teeth?
- Introduce Ss to the topic of the writing lesson:
“Pratical advice on water and electricity consumption”
20 mins Pre- Activity 2: TEACHING VOCABULARY T-Whole class
writing - Presentation:
+ Choose some important words appeared in the textbook:
 Consumption (n)
 Rinse (v)
 Unplug (v)
 Absorb (v)
 Facility (n)
 Deforestation (n)
+ Using visual aids, antonym, synonym, definition, example
and realia to clarify meaning of the vocabulary.
+ Ask some Ss to read new words and write down in their
notebook.
- Practice: Play a game “WORD SEARCH”
+ Make the “word search” in advance through website:
theteacherscorner.net
+ Assign the task via classkick.
+ Instruct Ss to access classkick to play the game.
Activity 3: MATCHING
- Do task 2 in the textbook:
+ Ask Ss to look through quickly the text and circle keywords. Individual
+ Do Task 2: Match the headings with the paragraphs.
( Ask Ss to access classkick to do the task.)
+ Let Ss work in pairs to check their answers with a partner. Pairs work
+ Check answers with the whole class. T-Whole class

- Do task 3 in the textbook:
+ Ask Ss to read the sentences and underline the possible Individual
keywords.
+ Then, tell Ss to read the text again to look for specific
information.

1. Fossil fuel and non-renewable resources are very important
to our life.
2. They are coal, oil, and natural gases which produce energy.
3. Using much fossil fuel and many non-renewable resources
makes air pollution, and we will run out of them.
4. What should we do to save them?
5. We ought to reduce the use of fossil fuel for energy.
6. We also need to research and replace fossil fuel with other
renewable fuels such as water, sun, etc.
7. Finally, we should raise awareness on the problems in the
public and in education.
Activity 5: WRITING
- Introduce the structure of the writing:
+ Give Ss some guidelines before writing: T-Class
 Choose one of the limited natural resources in the table
(task 4).
 Write three paragraphs similar to those in task 2.
+ The stucture of the writing:
 Paragraph 1: Introduce the type of pollution
 Paragraph 2: Give some practical advice
 Paragraph 3: Conclude.

- Let Ss write:

water and electricity?”
- Give Ss 5 minutes to discuss.
- Listen and give feedback to the student.
5 mins Wrap-up - Remind the main points of the lesson: T-Whole class
and + Learn some new words
homework + Write about environmental problems and give some practical
advice to preserve the environment.

- Assign homework:
+ Rewrite the paragraph (After receiving feedback from T and
other Ss)
