FLEXIBLE MANUFACTURING SYSTEM

Time Allowed: 02 Hours (OPEN BOOK)

QUESTION 1
A Flexible Manufacturing System to produce 120,000 Engine blocks (Motor Block + Motor Cover)
per year has the following operational data (PROCESS PLAN):

STATION Machining Boring Load/Unload

PART (3 Servers) (3 Servers) (2 Servers)
Motor Block 3 Min 3 Min 2 Min
Motor Cover 3 Min 3 Min 2 Min

The FMS works in 3 shifts (a total of 2,000 x 3) or 6,000 hours. The labor cost is 10 US$ per hour.
The Internal rate of return is set at 20 % and the linear rate of machine depreciation is 10 years. The
FMS system uses a central transportation system. The transportation time for each transfer between
stations is constant and takes 2 Min. There are 5 AGV’s in the system.
It is observed that when the total Work in process (WIP) is 39 work pieces the lead-time is 58.5 Min.
When the WIP is reduced to 20 work pieces the lead-time is reduced to 30 min. This reduction in
WIP from 39 to 20 work pieces reduces the production rate from 40 pieces/hour to 39 pieces/hour
only.

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:

1. For the above FMS give the marking corresponding to a WIP of 39 pieces in the Petri Net push
system model in the figure given below. Give the time assigned to each transition. How do you
take care of modeling the transport?
2. Explain the reason why by reducing the WIP from 39 to 20 pieces, the lead time nearly reduces
by 50 % (from 58.5 min to 30 min) while the production rate only drops from 40 pieces/hour to
39 pieces/hour or only 2.5 %.
3. Give the lead-time, production rate and percent utilization of each server, that corresponds to the
above WIP based on the corresponding marked PN Model.

PN MODEL FOR QUESTION 1

QUESTION 2
Three PN models are presented. For each of these models reply the queries below:
(a) List the transitions that are enabled?
(b) Show the marking after t1 fires.
(c) Is M live?
(d) Is M safe?
(e) Is M bounded?
(f) Exhibit all markings reachable from M.
(g) Show a marking that is not reachable from M.
