Low Profile Ceiling Isolation Hangers

DISCUSSION
While it is very difficult to say with complete certainty that isolated ceilings began with our sister
company Korfund some seventy years ago, it can certainly be said that this pioneer company
strongly influenced their development. It is therefore fitting that the most revolutionary approach
to the suspension of isolated ceilings, and even associated mechanical electrical services, comes

;;;
;;;
;;
from a family member! What follows is basic engineering philosophy, the product as it has
existed for the second half of this century, and the system that will carry us into the new
millenium.

The basic mass laws that apply to isolated floor construc-

tion for sound transmission loss act similarly though not
as well for isolated ceiling systems. The separation of two
masses by a resilient system perform better than a sin-
gle mass of equal weight. While improvement numbers
are varied, 10 to I5 db is most typical. The acoustician
can tell you more.

If the suspended ceiling is lightweight, it’s value is to reduce reverberation time within a space or
the time it takes for a sound to die out. For reducing the passage of sound from one vertical
area
to another, the more mass the better. Two layers of suspended sheetrock
is good, three is better.

For the past thirty years, drywall or sheetrock ceilings have largely
replaced lath and plaster construction used extensively prior to 1965.

;;;
The modern ceiling isolation hanger uses isolation elements of neoprene,
springs or a combination of both. Neoprene by itself attenuates high fre-
quency energy while springs attenuate low. Together they effectively handle
all ranges.

;;;;
;;
The housing or hanger that surrounds the isolator is
installed in series with vertical attachments to the struc-
ture above and below. The hanger occupies 4 to 10
inches of space above the framing members of the ceil-
ing.Through another series of attachments and clips 3
more inches of space is utilized.
When mechanical services or an additional ceiling needs
to be installed the same hanger cannot by code carry
these accessories. New isolators must be used, their
supports penetrating the first ceiling referred to as the
barrier. The myriad of wires or rods supporting the sec-
ondary ceiling or mechanical services must also be isolat-
ed from the barrier ceiling. Isolation bushings which
insure that the isolated barrier will not have it’s resiliency
compromised must be used at each penetration. An
effective installation is both expensive and very difficult to carry out.

The next page introduces the Low Profile series, LP ceiling isolation hangers. In it’s basic form,
it takes up no additional space above the cold rolled channel. Even with 2” deflection springs the
combination hanger only adds 4” total above the suspension members. It uses no clips to ceiling
suspension channels that can fail. It’s unique construction allows for code approved support of
secondary ceilings and mechanical services from the same hanger without additional costly and
inefficient penetrations. It costs no more than conventional isolation hangers and is less expen-
sive to install. It is the first and only isolation hanger that combines space saving efficiency, econ-
omy and practicality into one code approved system.
