562 Enhanced Dominator Motor - Product Bulletin Issue Date: 06-21-2003

Product Description

The Enhanced 562 Dominator Motor incorporates all new features developed through the continuous
improvement process in Schlumberger’s REDA motors during the last years. The new design will
replace all Bronze/Steel laminations motors, thus new part numbers for the All Steel (AS) motors were
created for each corresponding Bronze/Steel.

Features and Benefits

The 562 SD Dominator motor replaces the traditional 562 Dominator motor with Bronze/Steel
laminations, which is recognized as the most reliable motor.

The Schlumberger’s REDA 562 XD Dominator motor incorporates the following new features to

Schlumberger Private
maximize performance and improve reliability when compared to other 562–series motors:.

Stator

The 562 Dominator motor uses an all-steel stator for increased stator life. The stator laminations have
been designed to increase the amount of copper in the slots thus maximizing efficiency. The 562
Dominator incorporates closed-slot lamination, which allows the use of PEEK-insulated magnet wire.
The standard configuration includes PEEK insulation. The motor is also available with a polyimide
wire/varnished stator.

Rotor
The 562 All Steel uses the same rotor as the 562 Bronze/Steel motor.

Anti-rotation rotor bearing

The anti-rotation rotor bearing is constructed of a

nonmagnetic material so that it can operate in magnetic
fields generated by the all-steel stator laminations without
overheating. The rotor bearing also incorporates a spring
load key (SLK) to prevent rotation. There is no need to
modify the motor construction for application in cold-well
applications with bottom hole temperatures as low as 50°F
(10°C).

Oil

The 562 Dominator motor (standard configuration) is filled with REDA No. 5 oil. InTouch content No.
3016193 provides recommendations and guidelines for motor oil selection.

Shaft

The shaft has been increased in length by 2 ½ inches

to allow for the extra rotor bearing. Other than the
additional length, the shaft has the same profile:
• Full sized shaft for maximum strength. The
standard shaft is rated to 750 HP and the
high strength shaft is rated to 1200HP at 60
Hz.
• Involute Splines provides stronger coupling

Schlumberger Private
for high torque applications,. The shaft is
self-centering to reduce vibration and
eliminates torque lock.

Thrust bearing

The 562 XD Dominator motor uses a HL (High Load) thrust bearing that enhances motor reliability when
operating at high temperatures.

High Horsepower Base System

The High Horsepower Base System was designed and successfully tested under severe conditions
including high temperature, highly deviated wells, high HP (up to 1170HP). The High Horsepower Base
System consist of a compliant mounted zirconia bearing/bushing system and extra Rotor Bearing added
to the end of the stator stack.

ARZ Compliant bearing

The ARZ compliant bearing used in the 562 Dominator motor base is based on the ARZ bearing that
been successfully used in Schlumberger’s REDA’s abrasion resistant pumps to enhance its performance
and drastically reduce wear in abrasive environments. The ARZ bearing is compliant mounted on aflas
o-rings, which dampens vibrations, absorb potential impacts from whirl, and accommodate slight
assembly misalignments.

Extra Rotor Bearing

The 562 Dominator motor has an extra rotor bearing outside the bottom rotor on each motor. This extra
rotor bearing provides additional stability to the shaft.

Schlumberger Private
Extra Rotor Bearing ARZ Bearing

Welded joints

The 562 Dominator motor heads and bases are secured by welded joints as opposed to lock-plated
joints. This design feature reduces the outside diameter of the motor and provides a positive seal and
greater strength.

Motor Configurations and Application Guidelines

The 562 All Steel Dominator motor will replace the current Bronze/Steel 562 Dominator motors, which
will become obsolete in 2004. The 562 All Steel Dominator is available in two designs: 562 XD
Dominator, which is the full version and includes all the features described above and the 562-Limited,
a fit-for-purpose configuration for application in low HP, low temperature and generally high water cut
applications.

The 562-Limited All Steel motor replaces the 562-Limited motor with Bronze/Steel laminations which
was developed to address the need to offer a cost effective alternative in low HP – low temperature,
high water cut applications by eliminating those features that while considered as requirements in high
HP applications, were not required in low HP - low temperature applications. The 562-Limited motors
are available in Single Section motors (S) only, with six or less rotors (base rating 180 HP and lower).

The changes included removing the oil filter, replace the extended
base with a the short base, use of standard (Babbitt) thrust bearing
instead of the HL thrust bearing, and use SAE splines with a lower
cost coupling instead of involute splines.

The 562-Limited motors are available in 15 HP increments (half Rotor)

@ 60 Hz and base rating. These changes were made to the existing
part numbers on all single section motors, both carbon steel and
Redalloy with six or less rotors.

The selection of the rating of the 562 Dominator (XD and Limited) and all other application criteria are
the same as those used for the 562 Dominator Bronze/ Steel. The main criteria when selecting a motor
for any application is its Motor Internal Operating Temperature, which is calculated for each particular
application using SLB software such as DSEL, SmartSelect, or SubPUMP.

The 562 Dominator motor is available in Carbon Steel and Redalloy in single (S), upper tandem (UT) and
Center Tandem (CT) configurations. The table below provides a quick reference to the configurations
and structure of the 562 XD Dominator and the 562-Limited.

The 562-Limited motor should be used in applications with BHT (Bottom Hole Temperature) of up to
200°F or when the maximum winding temperature is less than 300°F as calculated by SLB applications
software such as SubPUMP, SmartSelect or 562DSEL.

Babbitt Thrust Bearings currently used in Schlumberger’s REDA motors and protectors will become
obsolete in the near future, at this time, the BOM of the 562-Limited motors will be modified to replace
this thrust bearing with a KMC type bearing.

In higher temperature or high profile applications, it is recommended to use the standard 562 XD
Dominator, which have all the All Steel "Dominator" features and additional oil capacity in its extended
base.

The graph below shows the effect of the application guidelines for the 562-Limited motor (LT) as
compared to the effect of the existing rules for the original 562 Dominator motor (designated HT). This

562 Tandem Motor Guidelines

• Winding designs must be identical.

• The base horsepower ratings of the individual motors should be comparable in size (equal or
within one or two rotors of being equal).
• All combinations that should be of interest are listed in the motor tables in DSEL and SubPump.

Connection to Protector

The 562 motor head is designed to connect to 540 and 562 Series Protectors flange.

Connection to Downhole Monitoring Gauges

Single Section Motors (S) can not be connected with downhole monitoring tools because it has an
integrated base instead of a flange to bolt onto. If desired to install a downhole gauge with a single
section system, a UT-type motor should be used.

Upper Tandem (UT) and Center Tandem (CT) motors must have a DME (Downhole Monitoring
Equipment) adapter connect to a Surveyor (Obsolete) and PumpWatcher, or a MSB (Multi-sensor)
adapter to connect to a Phoenix MultiSensor monitoring tool.

Schlumberger Private
Carbon Steel and Redalloy adapters to the Phoenix MultiSensor are available in the WCP catalog,
http://www.wcp.oilfield.slb.com/cs/catalog/, under:
Submersible Pumps> Miscellaneous Items > Adapters> Motor to DME Adapter.
The Part Numbers available are 1250034, B250034, X25003G.

The graph below shows the complete adapter (with filter), but if required, an adapter without filter can
be ordered.

Application Software

The new All Steel 562 Dominator motor data has been added to the Compiled Spreadsheets (CAE)
software, and the Reda Smart Select software. Smart Select is an improved version of the DSEL
software that provides a more user-friendly interface for sizing and selecting a variable-rated motor.
The Schlumberger Smart Select software also allows the user to select a motor based on motor
temperature.
562DSEL and SchlumbergerSmart Select software allow the user to choose the motor rating at any
percentage between 50% and 100%. If using the SubPUMP software, intermediate base ratings of 50,
60, 67, 70, 80, 83, 87, 90, 93, 97, and 100 percent of base rating can be selected based on application
conditions.

SubPUMP databases are not updated with the new winding codes, however, since the motor
performance is the same, the Application Engineer should select the old winding code corresponding to
the new All Steel winding code. A Winding Code Cross-Reference table is available in the Technical
Information Release No. 3797025 in InTouchSuport.com.

Field Trial Results

A total of six 562 Enhanced Dominator motors were installed in six wells at Maxus-Indonesia since
December 2001. Four of the new motors were run in single motor-section configuration, 360HP. As of
the date of this report, (June 17, 2003), all four motors are still operating with no problems after 450+
days of continuous operation.

Two 360 HP motors were installed in tandem in the well WIDURI C-05 for a total of 720HP installed on
March 5, 2003. Unfortunately, these motors—with the rest of the ESP string—were pulled from the
well on March 29, 2002 because the LT pump shaft broke.
Both motors were in excellent electrical and mechanical conditions. The same tandem motors were run
back in another well in September 1st, 2002 and they are still operating as of June 16, 2003.

Schlumberger Private
A total of 15 motors were installed in 11 wells of OXY-Ecuador since September 2002. Five motors, one
360HP and four 450HP, were run in single motor-section configuration and all of them are still in the
wells as of June 16, 2003.

Eight motors, 4UT and 4 CT, were installed in tandem configurations in four wells, three of these
tandems have been operating for 150+ days, but the actual cumulative runtime can be lower because
the intermittent operation of some wells.

One of the tandem installations was a 900HP installed in the well Eden Yuturi EY-A3 on January 22,
2003. This ESP string was retrieved on February 18 2002 after repeated incidents that shorted the
power cable on surface between the transformer and junction box. The motors were dismantled and
inspected in Coca, Ecuador and then in Bartlesville, OK. The UT motor had two phases shorted to
ground. No manufacturing or design failure was identified. The CT motor was OK.

Additional information is available in Field Test Report, InTouch content No. 3797031.
