REBAR ENGINEERING ACTIVITY 2

What is the difference between lap length and development length?

Both lap length and development length are important factors to be considered in
Rebar Engineering. However, they do differ in their application. In definition,
development length is the length of a reinforcement bar that is needed to be attached in
a concrete structure in order to enhance the bond strength between the concrete and
the bar. On the other hand, lap length is the length of two reinforcement bars that must
overlap and be connected together to create a bond between the two rebars. In other
words, development length is intended to create bond between the bar and the concrete
while lap length is to create bond between two rebars. Lastly, the amount of these two
length varies depending on different factors like concrete strength and rebar size. These
factors must be taken into consideration when designing the proper development and
lap length.
