Evolution of windows & doors
• Early windows and doors fabricated and
assembled on site using wood
– Good artisanry required
– Minimal performance criteria
• Keep out rain
• Let in light
• Open and close
– Small panes of glass provided many opportunities for
leakage

Evolution of windows & doors
• Contemporary improvements include
– New materials including metal, vinyl & fiberglass and
combinations of two materials
– Much higher performance characteristics
• Improved thermal performance
• Decreased air infiltration
• Larger sizes
• Fire rating
– Mass production reduced cost
• Reduced detailing requirements to
– Installation
– Decorative surrounds

Window materials
• Wood is oldest material used
– Shrink-swell, decay and termite vulnerability affects performance
– Must be painted or sealed periodically
– Exterior frequently clad with more weather resistant material
– Good R-value
• Aluminum is most commonly used today
– Used in curtain wall and storefront assemblies
– Will not shrink or swell
– Extruded cross-sections snap together for easy assembly
– Low R-value.
11/11/2010 BC 2024 14
Window materials
• Steel
– Stronger than aluminum
• Form slimmer, more elegant profiles
– Subject to corrosion
– Requires frequent painting
– Largely replaced by aluminum
• Vinyl (PVC)
– Extruded cross-sections almost maintenance free
– Significant thermal shrink and swell
– Good R-value
• Fiberglass
– Dimensionally stable & strong
– Available in many colors

Performance rating systems
• Performance rating types
– Energy performance
• NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council)
– Structure and water leakage
• Industry adopted standards include resistance to
– Wind loads
– Water leakage
– Air leakage
– Forced entry
• Manufacturer ratings for
– Opening force
– Life cycle
– Vertical deflection
– Acoustical qualities
• Material neutral
– Applied evenly to all window assemblies
• Frame, sash and gaskets
• Glass
