Titanium, Ti

Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It is a

lustrous transition metal with a silver colour, low density, and high strength. Titanium is resistant
to corrosion in sea water, aqua regia, and chlorine.

Scandium, Sc
Scandium is a chemical element with the symbol Sc and atomic number 21. A silvery-white
metallic d-block element, it has historically been classified as a rare-earth element,[6] together
with yttrium and the lanthanides.

Silver, Ag
Silver is a chemical element with the symbol Ag (from the Latin argentum, derived from
the Proto-Indo-European h₂erǵ: "shiny" or "white") and atomic number 47. A soft, white,
lustrous transition metal, it exhibits the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity,
and reflectivity of any metal.

Gold, Au
Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au (from Latin: aurum) and atomic number 79,
making it one of the higher atomic number elements that occur naturally. In its purest form, it is
a bright, slightly reddish yellow, dense, soft, malleable, and ductile metal. Chemically, gold is
a transition metal and a group 11 element. It is one of the least reactive chemical elements and is
solid under standard conditions.

Platinum, Pt
Platinum is a chemical element with the symbol Pt and atomic number 78. It is
a dense, malleable, ductile, highly unreactive, precious, silverish-white transition metal.

Titanium - Industrial Applications, Ti
Titanium is used in engine applications such as rotors, compressor
blades, hydraulic system components and nacelles. Titanium 6AL-4V
(grade 5) alloy accounts for almost 50% of all alloys used in aircraft
applications.

Due to their high tensile strength to density ratio, high corrosion

resistance, and ability to withstand moderately high temperatures without
creeping, titanium alloys are used in aircraft, naval ships, spacecraft and
missiles. For these applications titanium alloyed with aluminium,
vanadium, and other elements is used for a variety of components
including critical structural parts, fire walls, landing gear, exhaust ducts
(helicopters), and hydraulic systems.  In fact, about two thirds of all
titanium metal produced is used in aircraft engines and frames.

Scandium – Industrial Applications, Sc

Scandium is used in aluminium-scandium alloys for aerospace industry
components and for sports equipment such as bicycle frames, fishing
rods, golf iron shafts and baseball bats.

Scandium iodide is used in mercury vapour lamps, which are used to

replicate sunlight in studios for the film and television industry. Scandium
oxide (Sc2O3), is used to make high intensity “stadium” lights.

The radioactive isotope 45Sc is used in oil refineries as a tracing agent.

Very dilute scandium sulphate is used to improve the germination of

seeds such as corn, peas and wheat.
Silver – Industrial Applications, Ag
Silver has many industrial uses, accounting for more than half of annual
demand worldwide over the last five years.
This means that economic growth can affect silver prices far more than it
affects gold. Only 10-15% of annual gold demand worldwide comes from
industrial use, the rest going to jewelry and investment.
Because of silver's physical strength, brilliance, malleability and ductility
(it can be squashed or pulled into shape), people have also used silver
in jewelry, tableware and fine art for thousands of years. Industrial
applications use silver's conductivity (the highest of any element for
electricity and heat) as well as its sensitivity to light and anti-bacterial
qualities.
Today silver is invaluable to solder and brazing alloys, batteries,
dentistry, glass coatings, LED chips, medicine, nuclear reactors,
photography, photovoltaic (or solar) energy, RFID chips (for tracking
parcels or shipments worldwide), semiconductors, touch screens, water
purification, wood preservatives and many other industrial uses.
Washington-based industry group the Silver Institute calls it "the
indispensable metal".
Gold – Industrial Applications, Au

Gold has many uses in the production of glass. The most basic use in
glassmaking is that of a pigment. A small amount of gold, if suspended
in the glass when it is annealed, will produce a rich ruby colour.

Gold is also used when making specialty glass for climate-controlled

buildings and cases. A small amount of gold dispersed within the glass
or coated onto the glass surface will reflect solar radiation outward,
helping the buildings stay cool in the summer, and reflect internal heat
inward, helping them stay warm in winter.

The visor on the helmet of an astronaut's space suit is coated with a very
thin film of gold. This thin film reflects much of the very intense solar
radiation of space, protecting the astronaut's eyes and skin.

Gold is used in many places in the standard desktop or laptop computer.

The rapid and accurate transmission of digital information through the
computer and from one component to another requires an efficient and
reliable conductor. Gold meets these requirements better than any other
metal. The importance of high quality and reliable performance justifies
the high cost.

Edge connectors used to mount microprocessor and memory chips onto

the motherboard and the plug-and-socket connectors used to attach
cables all contain gold. The gold in these components is generally
electroplated onto other metals and alloyed with small amounts of nickel
or cobalt to increase durability.
Platinum – Industrial Application, Pt

Platinum’s industrial applications could fill a book all on their own. For

instance, platinum catalysts are used to manufacture fertilizer
ingredients, and the metal is a key component in silicones, hard disks,
electronics, dental restoration, glass-manufacturing equipment and
sensors in home safety devices.

Another platinum use is in the construction of hard drives with extremely

high storage densities. And, because it is reactive to oxygen, oxides of
nitrogen and carbon monoxide, platinum can be used to detect changes
in the amount of those materials in vehicles and buildings. For the same
reason, platinum is also used in medical sensors, particularly medical
instruments that measure blood gases, to detect oxygen.
