Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Chloe Katinas Date: 4/15/2021

Group Size: 15-20 Allotted Time: 50 minute period Grade Level: 3rd Grade

Subject or Topic: Lesson 3: “Pack the particles” The 3 states of matter

Common Core/PA Standard(s):
a. Differentiate between properties of objects such as size, shape, and weight
and properties of materials that make up the objects such as color, texture,
and hardness.
Differentiate between the three states of matter, classifying a substance as a
solid, liquid, or gas.

Learning Targets/Objectives: Student will be able to identify the make up of particles within a
solid, liquid and gas by completing classifying the 3 states of matter worksheet.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1) Jamboard post 1) Completion of the jamboard
2) Gym activity 2) Participation in the activity
Assessment Scale:
The third grade student will be able to complete the worksheet with 80% proficiency because
a new topic was introduced.
Subject Matter/Content: Molecules movement/structure in each of the states of matter
Prerequisites: Knowing the three states of matter
Key Vocabulary:
● Molecule: is a group of two or more atoms that bond together
● Atom: are the basic building blocks of matter

Content/Facts:
● When an object is a solid, all the molecules are packed tightly together, there is very
little room for movement
● When an object is a liquid, some of the molecules are close together, while others
start to move further apart
● When an object is a gas the molecules are scattered all over the place
● When the temperature is changed it changes the speed of the molecules, because of
their speed changing how the molecules are packed together
● The faster the molecules move, the further apart they are, the slower the molecules
are
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
● Teacher will greet students for the day “Good morning everyone! Yesterday we did an
inquiry on how temperature affects the 3 states of matter. “Today we are going to
learn about why temperature affects objects and how the molecules inside of them
move around.”
● Teacher will play States of matter for kids - What are the states of matter? Solid, liquid
and gas video on youtube- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQ4WduVp9k4
● Teacher will read Atoms and Molecules (My Science Library) By:Tracy Maurer

Development/Teaching Approaches

1. Teacher will start the lesson by playing States of matter for kids - What are the states
of matter? Solid, liquid and gas video on youtube- https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=JQ4WduVp9k4
2. Then the teacher will read Atoms and Molecules (My Science Library) By:Tracy Maurer
3. After the teacher will create a KWL chart on a large sticky note on everything they
know, what to know about the three states of matter so far
4. This will help students review what they have already learned
5. Then teacher will show this photo to give students a visual of what the molecules look
like in each of the states of matter

6.
7. Then teacher will either use classroom ***gymnasium if available for the next activity
8. In a large empty space teacher will have all the students lined up close together in
rows
9. Teacher will explain that this is what the molecules inside a solid look like, tightly
packed and not much room to move
10. Then the teacher will spread the students out a little bit and have some students link
arms and move around the room
11. Teacher will explain that this is what the molecules in a liquid look like
12. Then finally teacher will have students spread out across the room and run around all
over
13. Teacher will explain that this is what the molecules in a gas look like
14. Then teacher will bring students back together and complete the “L” learn part of the
KWL chart
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
● Teacher will have students complete jamboard post asking them to “ Choose ONE of
the three states of matter and describe how their molecules are packed and what
speed they move at.”
● Teacher will wrap up lesson and tell students how tomorrow they will be learning
about the solar system and how the states of matter impact our solar system

Accommodations/Differentiation:
Follow all IEPs
*** Student has a hearing impairment
● Teacher will provide a written out explanation of the gym activity and will have
written out signs for each state of matter so the student knows which state they are
recreating

Materials/Resources:
● Jamboard post-
