the students

When the students sit down in their chairs, play the "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Canadian Brass. Once the
video is over, ask the students what they noticed in the song and what they enjoyed about it. Then, explain
that the instruments in the video come from the brass family, like that of the woodwind and percussion family.
Families are how instruments are grouped together, in the brass is trumpet, trombone, tuba, and french horn.
Show diagrams of these four instruments and as I explain the instruments I play the clip on the slide so they
know what each instrument sounds like. After that is done I will talk about John Phillip Sousa, since he did a
lot for the brass family including marches and the sousaphone (show picture hear). After talking about
Sousa, show the trumpet and trombone to the students as well as show them some interesting things the
instruments can do, ex: glissando on trombone. The last activity for the students will be Brass Message in
which they will be able to have their own paper trumpet and they will be able to make noise through the horn.
If time allows I will have the students test to see if their instrument works and then have a couple volunteers
or everyone come up with their own four beats of a tune on their horn. In which the class will have a steady
beat shown through their feet and then a student will be able to "play" four beats worth of tune, which I will
model and explain before doing. Lastly, show a chart of the instruments and ask questions such as "what
instrument is this" and questions about Sousa.
