KNS2591: Civil Engineering Laboratory 3

Case Study: Fluid

Objective: Design an experiment that investigates an area of fluid mechanics.

Description:
Choose an area of fluid mechanics that interests you. Define a problem to solve, questions to
answer, phenomena to demonstrate or task to accomplish. Your project should include the design
of experiment (related principle, determination of related parameters and dimensional analysis),
drawing/sketches of experimental setup, procedure for the experiment, chart/table used or
expected to obtain, sample calculation and expected outcome. Example of the theme/ideas for
this case study are as listed (but not limited to) below. The ideas for the experimental apparatus
should be related to the experiments that you encounter in this course. Please make sure that no
group doing the same experimental design.

Ideas/theme for Experimental Design

1) Miniature jet ski
2) Model sprinkler system for irrigation
3) Pressure on airfoil
4) Liquid jet cutting
5) Flowrate measurement for irrigation system
6) Device that requires calculation of pressure, flow rate, etc.
Ideas for Experimental Apparatus
1) Apparatus for flow through weir
2) Apparatus for flow through venturimeter
3) Apparatus for flow through nozzle
4) Apparatus for flow through an orifice
5) Apparatus to demonstrate Bernoulli’s Principle

You will be assess based on the level of difficulty of the experiment design, report format,
principle and calculation related to the experiment, experimental set-up (drawing/sketches),
procedure for experiment and possible outcome.
