3 Wi-Fi Operation
3.1 Establishing a Link with a OIW-EX Unit or Supplied PC
To ensure smooth running of the Hand Held Controller please ensure that the OIW Monitor or
PC you wish to connect to is switched on and that the Wi-Fi “connected” symbol is shown,
see Figure 2.
When the Hand Held Controller is turned on, the opening screen will be as shown below (left).
The connection status can be seen at the top of the screen and will indicated that there is no
communications link; represented by the small X next to the arrows pointing left and right.
If either the OIW Monitor or PC/Laptop are on and are in range then the ATEX Wireless
controller will connect and the small X next to the arrows pointing left and right will disappear.
See Figure 3 (right).
Within VNC, to connect to the OIW you have established a connection with select the green
GO button at the bottom of the screen Figure 4 (Right).
Enter the Computer Name of the OIW-EX unit you wish to connected to.
Then enter the VNC password for the OIW-EX unit to which you are trying to connect (default
password is “password”). Finally select the ok button at the top of the Connect box.
If the unit remains unconnected after repeated attempts then select the EXIT option from the
File menu at the bottom of the screen and check if the WI-Fi connection has been lost;
see (Figure 3 on Page 8).
The VNC menu options at the bottom of the screen are detailed in the table below.
NOTE: when scroll mode ( ) has been selected the user can ONLY scroll and can not
enter information or interact with the OIW-EX unit.

No zoom. One pixel on the OIW-EX100 screen is one pixel on the PDA
Customized zoom. The zoom value can be defined in menu - zoom factor
Scroll mode. If in zoom mode, the screen will follow the pen
2. When File explorer first runs it will default to the Hand Held Controller’s own internal
storage, Figure 7, i.e. set to exploring the Hand Held device, note the device icon.
3. To explore files on the OIW-EX unit, tap the ‘shared folder’ icon, Figure 8.
4. The first time this is done the Hand Held Controller will ask for the path to connect to.
The path should be entered in the form \\<computer name>, as can be seen in the
example in Figure 9 \\oiwsn00149.
Your may also access the Laptop supplied by Advanced Sensors by using its computer
name, \\AS-Monitor\.
5. The device will indicate to the user that it is connecting to the OIW-EX unit. Once
connected it will display as shown below. The user can then navigate to the Shared
Documents folder where the OIWlogs are located.
6. To copy a log file or any other file simply place and hold the cursor on the file until a
menu of options appears. From the menu select EDITÎCOPY or EDITÎCUT. Then
tap the Hand Held device icon, see Figure 7 on Page 11, and then select
EDITÎPASTE. A progress bar will show the progress of the file copy/move.
NOTE: if large files are being moved or copied it may be necessary to tap the
screen to ensure the Hand Held does not drop the connection or power off due
to lack of user activity.
4. Select the Add… button which will start the ‘Add Bluetooth Devices Wizard’ as
shown below. Tick the box labelled My device is set up and ready to be found
(If this is not done then the Next button will remain greyed out). Click the Next button.
5. The Bluetooth Wizard will indicate that it is searching for Bluetooth devices then after
a short while it will display all Bluetooth devices found, as shown below. Select the
Hand Held Controller and then select the Next button.
NOTE: If the Hand Held Controller is not found please ensure that:
the Hand Held Controller has not gone to “Sleep” due to an auto-shut
down, and
the Hand Held Controller is close to the OIW-EX Unit.
Once you have carried out the above please try again.
6. The next screen will ask you to add a passkey for the device. Select the option Let me
choose my own passkey and enter the number 1111 in the box next to that option
and then select the Next button, as shown below (left). After a short while the screen
on the Hand Held Controller will be as shown below (right). It will prompt the user for
the same passkey – enter 1111 on the Hand Held Controller screen.
NOTE: there is a timeout on this action so once the passkey has been entered on
the OIW-EX unit, immediately look at the Hand Held Controller screen and
await the prompt. If missed, simply repeat this step.
7. Once the passkey has been acknowledged on the Hand Held Controller the Bluetooth
wizard will change as shown below (left). A short while later it will then progress to
that shown below (right) indicating the device is now added. Select the Finish button
at this point.
2. The Bluetooth Network Connection Properties Window will appear. Double click on
the third option down Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and the Internet Protocol
Properties box will appear. The figure below shows both windows, slightly
overlapping.
3. The default option Obtain an IP address automatically will be set. Select the
option “Use the following IP address” and then enter an IP address in the box
provided. The IP address should be of the form 192.168.1.n where n is the number of
the OIW-EX unit at this particular installation i.e. if this is the first OIW-EX unit then n
will be 1, if it is the second n will be 2 etc. Now click on the Subnet field and windows
will automatically fill this field in. Finally select the OK button.
4. The PAN is now configured on the OIW-EX unit for connection to and monitoring by
the Hand Held Controller unit.
5 BlueTooth Operation
The Hand Held Controller can link to the OIW-EX Series of units via a Bluetooth Personnel
Area Network or PAN.
To establish a connection,
1. Select the Bluetooth icon in the lower right of the screen, as highlighted above.
2. A menu will appear as shown below. Ensure that Bluetooth has been turned on by
looking at the top menu option which should say Turn Bluetooth OFF indicating it is
currently ON. If it states Turn Bluetooth ON then tap that option and the screen
should look like that shown below. With Bluetooth on, tap the Bluetooth Manager
option.
3. With the Bluetooth Manager Screen open, as shown below, select the Tools option
from the list of options at the bottom of the screen and tap the Personal Network
Manager option.
4. In the Personal Network Manager screen tap the green + sign to add a device to the
network below (left). A list of available devices will be shown. Tap the device you wish
to connect to.
5. A status box will indicate that a connection is being made. Once the connection has
been established the status box will disappear and the Personal Network Manager
screen will return but now the OIW selected will be shown in the box headed
“Connected devices”, as shown in the figure below. Note that for a short period of time
the connection status will show as in the figure below (left) i.e. with a small x next to
the left and right arrows. However, shortly it will change as shown in the figure below
(right) i.e. the small x will disappear and the arrows will enlarge slightly.
In some instances this step may have to be repeated as during the connection phase the
connection may not be established. If repeated attempts to connect fail (a) ensure you
are close to the OIW you are attempting to connect to; (b) ensure the OIW is correctly
configure for Bluetooth operation.
Within VNC, to connect to the OIW you have established a connection with select the
green GO button at the bottom of the screen. This will produce the screen shown
below.
Enter the IP address of the OIW-EX unit you have connected to;
NOTE: this is the Bluetooth PAN (Personal Area Network) IP address and not
the LAN (cabled Local Area Network) IP address. The primary configuration
for the Bluetooth PAN IP address is 192.168.1.1, but where there is more than
one OIW-EX unit this may vary, as no two units can have the same address.
Then enter the VNC password for the OIW-EX unit to which you are trying to connect
(default password is “password”). Finally select the ok button at the top of the Connect
box.
If all information has been entered correctly then after a few seconds a view of the
OIW-EX unit’s screen will appear on the Controller, as shown below. If the unit fails to
connect repeat the connection, ensuring all details have been entered correctly.
If the unit remains unconnected after repeated attempts then select the EXIT option
from the File menu at the bottom of the screen and check if the Bluetooth connection
has been lost. IF this is the case then repeat section 5.1 Establishing a Link with a OIW-
EX Unit.
The VNC menu options at the bottom of the screen are detailed in the table below.
NOTE: when scroll mode ( ) has been selected the user can ONLY scroll and
can not enter information or interact with the OIW-EX unit.
