1.1 PREFACE
The ZR893 continuous oxygen monitor is an electro-chemical oxygen analyser using a high
purity, high density stabilised zirconia ceramic.
The zirconia tube is held in its own heated furnace and the resulting voltage signal generated
by the zirconia is antilogged and displayed in direct oxygen concentration on a high visibility
LED display panel.
The instrument is capable of reading between 0.5 ppb to 100% and is autoranging. The
concentration is displayed in parts per billion, parts per million and percent.
The ZR893 oxygen monitor can exist in a number of standard variations and these are
covered in this manual.
The instrument has however been designed in such a way that sub-variations to customer’s
specific requirements may be provided. Where these have been included, the data sheet
has been appended.
We are always trying to improve our product, of which this manual is part and so we would
greatly appreciate any information you can give us of any difficulties you may encounter.
IMPORTANT
Please read this manual- at least part 1 before attempting to install or operate the equipment.
The sample gas is heated to 650oC and therefore no combustibles should be present
at a limit to cause an explosion.
The equipment should be electrically connected and grounded in accordance with good
standard practice and at the correct voltage. (Refer to the voltage tag label on the back of the
instrument).

Manual Printing
The third column of the OPERATORS mode allows the instantaneous printout of the results
of an analysis to be printed out on any printer that is connected to the ZR893.
The printout shows the time and date of the printout and also the oxygen span and zero.
At the end of the printout it shows whether it was a timed or a manual printout.
Timed printing
The ZR893 can be programmed such that the instrument automatically prints out every few
minutes.
1) Enter the SET-UP mode. The timed printout set up can be found on the fifth row of
the SET-UP mode.
2) The dot matrix screen should display the message PRINT MINS and a number the
number relates to the number of minutes between printouts. To program in a new

The analyser requires little or no sample system with the exception of a pressure regulator to
reduce high pressure streams to below 7 barg or a sample pump for streams below 0.25
barg.
If the sample stream is dirty or wet, both solid material and moisture need to be removed
from the sample stream to ensure reliable and accurate results.
Metal tubing is recommended for the sample lines, especially if the instrument is being used
for measuring trace levels.
Hard plastics, such as nylon, Teflon or PVC may be used for measurements in the high ppm
or percent regions.
The use of rubber or soft plastics is not recommended as they may leak and lead to
inaccurate measurements.
On permanent installations, where the process stream is situated at great distance from the
analyser, it is advisable to use the bypass loop flowmeter to provide an up to date sample at
the analyser.

2.1 START-UP
1. Ensure that the pressure of the sample line (and calibration gas if used) is between
0.25 and 7 bars gauge. If not, either a pump or reducing value should be fitted. When
installation requires these extra sample handling components, and the expected
oxygen concentration in the sample is less than 100ppm, these components should
be high integrity - leak tight.
The sample outlet should not be taken to a point other than atmosphere pressure.
3. Check the flow through the instrument, the flow should be between 100-200cc/min.
The sample flow meter is located on the front panel of the instrument and the float
indicates the present flow through the cell.
4. The power switch is mounted on the IEC receptacle situated at the back of the
instrument. The switch should be depressed to the ON position. When this is done,
the instrument will light and the dot matrix display will show the message NOT
READY, since the instrument cannot produce accurate readings until the sensor is at
the proper operating temperature. Pressing ENTER at this stage will stop the NOT
READY flashing on the screen. The instrument takes 20 minutes to reach operating
temperature, although it is advisable to allow 35 minutes for the Instrument before any
analysis is done. If in doubt check the furnace temperature located in the
OPERATORS mode. However, if the instrument is measuring trace oxygen
levels, it is advisable to allow the instrument a couple of hours to stabilise to the
correct reading. When the furnace and zirconia cell are at equilibrium temperature,
and all the ‘pockets’ of high oxygen have been swept out of the system.
___________________________________________________________________________
8 of 32
There are two basic modes of operation. The first is the OPERATORS mode and this is the
normal everyday running mode. When the instrument is in this mode, the oxygen
concentration is displayed on the dot matrix screen.
When the instrument is first turned on and it has heated to the correct operating temperature,
the micro-processor automatically leaves the user in this mode.
The other mode of operation is the SET-UP mode and this has access via a password which
allows limited access in this mode to stop unauthorised tampering.
These modes access grid information and the display may be thought of as a small window
which can scan over a much larger page of information. The window can be moved up or
down, left or right. When the window is at the edge of the page, a message warns that you
cannot go further. (TOP LIMIT, BOTTOM LIMIT, LEFT LIMIT, RIGHT LIMIT).

To leave the SET-UP mode press the ENTER button again and you will be returned to the
OPERATORS mode.
Note: On receiving the instrument it will not have a password in memory and
pressing ENTER twice will allow entry to the SET-UP mode.
The CE button
The CE button will clear any typing errors that have been made whilst trying to type a number
in allowing the correct number to be input.
This button will log into memory any number that has been typed using the number pad.
This button allows us future expansion, and at the moment this button is not in use and
nothing will happen if it is pressed.
This shows the instantaneous reading of oxygen, and the display will also show whether the
sample is in the percent, ppm, or ppb range.

There are six windows accessible in the operation mode. These are:
i) Oxygen value
ii) Cell temperature
iii) ENTER for printout
iv) Eprom version
v) Serial number
vi) Instrument I.D.
The first window gives the instantaneous values for the oxygen.
The cell temperature indicates the operating temperature of the internal zirconia furnace.
The normal operating temperature is 650oC.
ENTER for a printout is to download the instantaneous value for oxygen to a parallel or serial
printer.
The last three are for reference only, but EPROM version and serial number should be
quoted with any query to Systech.
