Q2)

Label this.
What causes each one of these steps? Explain ion movements (5 marks)

1. Resting Potential: polarized state . Neuron at rest is more positive electrically outside
then inside the cell membrane.

2. Depolarization: sodium gates of membrane open and Na+ diffuse into the cell , causing
depolarization of membrane.

3. Action potential: Sodium gates close and potassium gates open.

4. Repolarization: K+ diffuse out, causing a repolarization of the membrane.

5. Recovery: Sodium_potassium pump restore original ion gradients and resting potential.
Q3) Which function of dopamine helps explain why drug users experience a sense of
pleasure when they use their drug of choice? (2 marks)

Dopamine is the most thrilling neurotransmitter. Dopamine perks the brain up and brings
feelings of pleasure. It’s responsible for that rush of joy when someone accomplish a goal or
succeed at a task. It plays a major role in brain’s reward system.
Some drugs prey on brain’s reward system. They stimulate the brain to release an
overabundance of dopamine. This creates a temporary sensation of pleasure, or a high.
