Intro to Philosophy

ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY

Islamic Philosophy refers to philosophy produced in an Islamic society. Islamic philosophy is a


generic term that can be defined and used in different ways. In its broadest sense it means the
world view of Islam, as derived from the Islamic texts concerning the creation of the universe
and the will of the Creator.

Summary:

We decided to divide our topic into further subtopics and all the groups members contributed
very well in this reading session.

Member 1:

Amna Mahsud gave a thorough introduction about Islamic Philosophy and its role in the field of
philosophy. Main points which were highlighted:

 Nature and origins of Islamic Philosophy


 The rise of Neoplatonism and its impact on Islamic philosophy

Member 2:

Then Areebah Khan talked about Rationality in Islamic Philosophy. The points discussed were:

 Islamic rationalism
 The view of Islamic philosophers ( Alfarabi, Avicenna, Algazel) about rationality in
Islam

Member 3:

Habiba Farooq discussed concepts of Metaphysics and Islamic Philosophy and covered
following points:

 Oneness is an important metaphysical concept and answers the riddles of the Universe
(unified world, integrated world).
 Universe uniformity, purposefulness and interdependence.
 Universal exists before things.
 All mankind expected to believe in Allah
Member 4:

Amna Noor continued the discussion and covered the following points:

 Fitrah: Recognition of Allah is imprinted on the souls of all Adam’s descendants.


 Clarification of the true position of mankind as the vicegerent of Allah on earth.
 Guides to Happy life committed to virtue, piety, justice and peace.

Member 5:

Mahzaib Hameed discussed Two perspectives in Islamic philosophy and presented following
points in her discussion:

 Conservative-Religious- Al Ghazali: More religious explanation of education.


 Pragmatic-Ibn Khaldoun: Use of knowledge to build the Islamic nation.

Member 6:

Zohra Arbab covered the final part that was Epistemology-knowledge. Following were here
points:

 The totality of life: Spiritual, intellectual, religious, cultural and individual.


 Religious and Intellectuals.
 Islamic education deals with all fields of knowledge.
 Man: The concept of mind and spirit, Mind and senses
