Definition of Terms:

1. PYTHAGORAS – The first to use the term Philosophy.

2. PHILOSOPHY - Comes from Greek word: Philo (LOVE) Sophia (WISDOM).


3. SOCRATES – A Greek philosopher and founder of Western philosophy.
4. PLATO – An ancient Greek philosopher. He founded the Platonist school of thought and
the Academy.
5. ARISTOTLE – An Ancient Greek philosopher. He is the founder of the Peripatetic school of
philosophy in the Lyceum in Athens.
6. ST. AUGUSTINE – A theologian and philosopher of Berber origin and the Bishop of Hippo
Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa.
7. THOMAS AQUINAS – Was an Italian Dominican friar and priest..
8. RENE DESCARTES – A French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician.
9. DAVID HUME – A Scottish Enlightenment philosopher, historian, economist, librarian, and
essayist.
10. IMMANUEL KANT – A German philosopher and one of the central Enlightenment
thinkers.

LESSON 2: THE SELF, SOCIETY AND CULTURE

Definition of Terms:

1. SEPARATE – It is meant that the self is distinct from other selves.

2. SELF-CONTAINED – With its own thought, characteristics, and volition. It does not require
any other self for it to exist.
3. COSISTENCY – Allows to studied, described, and measure.
4. UNITARY – It is the Center of all experiences and thoughts that run through a certain
person.
5. PRIVATE – It suggest that the self is isolated from the external world.
6. MARCEL MAUSS – Was a French sociologist and anthropologist known as the “Father of
French ethnology”.
7. MOI – Refers to a person’s sense of who he is, his body..
8. PERSONNED – Composed of the social concepts of what it means to live in particular
institution, a particular family, a particular religion, a particular nationality..
9. MEAD AND VYGOTSKY – Both thinkers reacted in a creative way.
10. GENDER AND SELF – Gender is one of those loci of the self that is subject to alteration,
change, and development.

CHAPTER 2. LESSON 1: THE PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL SELF

Definition of Terms:

1. TESTOSTERONE – Primary sex hormone and anabolic steroid in males.


2. PSEUDOHERMAPHRODITES – Refers to someone whose external genitalia are not
consistent with his or her gonadal sex.
3. HERMAPHRODITES - An individual animal or flower that has both male and female
reproductive organs.
4. CRYPTORCHIDISM – An undescended testicle is usually corrected with surgery.
5. PHIMOSIS – The inability to retract the skin (foreskin or prepuce) covering the head
(glans) of the penis.
6. PUBERTY – Is the period of life.
7. MENARCHE - The first menstrual period of females which happens two years after the
start of puberty.
8. ESCHERICHIA COLI - Which spread through the digestive tract.
9. SYPHILIS - A sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can cause serious health problems
without treatment..
10. GONORRHEA – A sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by infection with the
Neisseria gonorrhea bacterium.

LESSON 3: THE SELF AS COGNITIVE CONSTRUCT

Definition of Terms:

1. WILLIAM JAMES – Was an original thinker in and between the disciplines of physiology,
psychology, and philosophy.
2. SIGMUND FREUD – Was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis.
3. EGO - The ‘I’ or self of any person. A person as thinking, feeling, and distinguishing itself
from the selves of others and from objects of its thought.
4. SUPEREGO - The ethical component of the personality and provides the moral standards
by which the ego operates.
5. ACTUAL – Self is who you are at the moment.
6. IDEAL – Self is who you liked to be.
7. OUGHT – Self is who you think you should be.
8. NARCISSIM – A trait characterized overly high self-esteem, self admiration, and self-
centeredness.
9. ROY BAUMEISTER – An American social psychologist who is known for his work on the
self, social rejection, belongingness, sexuality, and sex differences, self-control, self-esteem,
self defeating behaviours, motivation, aggression, consciousness, and free will.
10. SELF-ESTEEM – Is how we value and perceive ourselves.

4. HENRY GLEITMAN – A professor of psychology at the University of Pennsyvania.
5. JAMES GROSS - Is a psychologist best known for his research and emotion regulation.
6. DANEIL REISBERG – Is an American academic who is the Patricia and Clifford Lunneborg
Professor of Psychology at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
7. COLLECTIVIST CULTURE – Is a community that prioritize the group over the individual.
8. SOCIAL MEDIA - The means of interactions among people in which they create, share.
and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.
9. MIGRATION – To move into or come to live in a region or community especially as apart
of large-scale and continuing movement of population.
10. INTERMARRIAGES – Marriage between members of different racial, social, or religious
groups.

4. CHRISTIANITY – The faith tradition that focuses on the figure of Jesus Christ.
5. HINDUISM – A religion with various gods and goddeses.
6. ISLAM – Is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion centered around the Quaran

LESSON 4: THE POLITICAL SELF AND BEING FILIPNO

Definition of Terms:

1. SELF-SACRIFICE – Can be seen as an extension of the Filipino hospitality.
2. BAYANIHAN – Is the spirit of communal unity and cooperation of Filipinos
3. “BAHALA NA” ATTITUDE – Is the Filipino version of the famous line “Hakuna Matata”,
meaning no worries.
4. COLONIAL MENTALITY – Is a regarded as the lack of patriotism and the attitude where
Filipino favor foreign products more than their own.
5. MAŇANA HABIT - The Filipino term for procrastination.
6. NINGAS KUGON – A Filipino term for flame and “kugon”.
7. CRAB MENTALITY – A toxic trait among Filipinos were one resents the achievements of
another.
8. FILIPINO TIME – We have this common attitude of arriving late at commitments, dinner,
or parties especially if they are meeting someone close to them.
9. FILIPINO – Are often referenced to globally renowned personalities.
10. SUPERSTITIONS – As passed down from generation to generation.
