Q1 Design the longitudinal reinforcement for a 5-m span rectangular beam with b = 350
mm and h = 550 mm. The beam supports its self-weight plus a superimposed
characteristic (unfactored) uniform permanent action of 12 kN/m and a uniform
characteristic variable action of 25 kN/m. Check for serviceability limit states of
deflection and cracking. After that, design for the shear reinforcement. Use fck = 25
N/mm2, fyk = 460 N/mm2, and specific weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/m3.
Concrete cover should satisfy fire resistance of one hour and indoor low air humidity.

Q2 Design the longitudinal reinforcement for a 5.5-m span rectangular beam with b = 400
mm and h = 525 mm. The beam supports its self-weight plus a superimposed
characteristic (unfactored) uniform permanent action of 10 kN/m and a uniform
characteristic variable action of 30 kN/m. Check for serviceability limit states of
deflection and cracking. After that, design for the shear reinforcement. Use fck = 25
N/mm2, fyk = 500 N/mm2, and specific weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/m3. Use
concrete cover of 35 mm.

Q3 Design the longitudinal reinforcement for a 6-m span rectangular beam with b = 300
mm and h = 600 mm. The beam supports its self-weight plus a superimposed
characteristic (unfactored) uniform permanent action of 25 kN/m and a uniform
characteristic variable action of 20 kN/m. Check for deflection and cracking for the
reinforcement so design. Check for serviceability limit states of deflection and
cracking. After that, design for the shear reinforcement. Use fck = 30 N/mm2, fyk = 500
N/mm2, and specific weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/m3. Use concrete cover of 40
mm.

Q4 Design the longitudinal reinforcement for a 6-m span rectangular beam with b = 300
mm and h = 600 mm. The beam supports its self-weight plus a superimposed
characteristic (unfactored) uniform permanent action of 30 kN/m and a uniform
characteristic variable action of 40 kN/m. Check for serviceability limit states of
deflection and cracking. After that, design for the shear reinforcement. Use fck = 30
N/mm2, fyk = 500 N/mm2, and specific weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/m3. Use
concrete cover of 40 mm.

Q5 Design the longitudinal reinforcement for a 4-m span rectangular beam with b = 200
mm and h = 400 mm. The beam supports its self-weight plus a superimposed
characteristic (unfactored) uniform permanent action of 20 kN/m and a uniform
characteristic variable action of 15 kN/m. Check for serviceability limit states of
deflection and cracking. After that, design for the shear reinforcement. Use fck = 30
N/mm2, fyk = 460 N/mm2, and specific weight of reinforced concrete = 25 kN/m3.
Concrete cover should satisfy fire resistance of one hour and indoor moderate air
humidity.

Q6 A seaside resort plans to build a jetty to attract more tourists. The jetty will be
constructed using reinforced concrete where the plan view and cross section view are
shown in Figure 1. It is estimated that the characteristic variable action on the jetty is
4.0 kN/m2 and the finishing is 1.0 kN/m2. The jetty is on the coast and must be
designed for 1 hour fire resistance. The following information are also available:

i. Concrete characteristic strength = 35 N/mm2

ii. Reinforcement characteristic strength = 460 N/mm2
iii. Main reinforcement diameter = 25 mm
iv. Shear reinforcement diameter = 10 mm

a) Calculate the loading on beam B/1-2 and sketch the shear-force and bending-
moment diagrams acting on the beam by indicating the important values.

b) Design the main reinforcement required for the beam.
