STEM 434/534 Lesson Planning Template Spring 2021

(Complete answers in Purple font)

Name: Krystal Ricks Grade: 5th Topic: Graphs

Brief Lesson Description:
Students will be exploring scientific inquiry and understanding what a testable hypothesis is. Students will be understanding this through
several small experiments based upon cause-and-effect relationships. This will lead up to large investigation that will be conducted in
another classroom project. For this activity I will be ultizing learning stations for students to be able to understand cause and effect
relationships, and testable hypothesis.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to ask testable questions and make reasonable predications based upon there hypothesis of the natural world that
is around them. Students will be able to understand what is an cause and effect relationship and how it can have impact on an
experiment.
How did this lesson develop as a result of your examination of research and data about employing culturally sustaining pedagogical
strategies? (Think equal opportunity, student interests, race, gender, disabilities etc.)

This lesson will be able to see if my students are able to make reasonable predictions based upon observations of the world that
is around them. Based upon cause-and-effect relationships students can understand that actions can have consequence and
can even affect the world that is around them. This can be explored by my students looking at questions and recognizing
potential problems. By looking at questions the student will be able to make observations and make reasonable inferences.
Students will understand what is a question that can be possibly be answered by conducting the experiment.
Narrative / Background Information
Prior Student Knowledge:
Students will need to have knowledge in understanding how to read data, and have a basic understanding in comparing chart data to
graphs.

Science & Engineering Practices: (You must tie engineering practices into your plan)

Students can explore the natural and based upon them coming with their own scientific experiments they would like to conduct. This
lesson will focus on tangible experiments that students can conduct outside of the classroom if they have the materials. Even focus on
real-world examples of how they might see an cause and effect relationship with originally recognizing it. Students can be given broad
statement and then ask questions that could possibly be answered and break those questions given into smaller and more concise
questions that can be answered.

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:

Students might not be able to understand the cause-and-effect relationships and be able to pull key information that would make this an
cause and effect relationship. Students will continue use broad questions and not be able to break those questions down.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmNpzteP434
I think this video is able to show and provide and examples of what is an cause and effect relationship. What is a testable hypothesis and
breaking down scientific inquiry.

After the video I plan to play a game and each student will be given a strip of paper. One group of students will have an cause and another
group of students will have effects. The students will have to work together to figure who they belong too an example would be one
student will have a cause and it will say “ you lost a tooth” the student will have to find there matching partner who is the effect and that
students strip will say “ So the tooth fairy came”

After this I will have a discussion with students and talk about cause and effects relationships they may have noticed. Such has if we leave
an ice cream outside while it is hot outside what is likely to happen to the ice cream. Another example would be what happens if we decide
that we are no longer going to water plants, the students will know that the plants will eventually die if they do not receive water. I will
then have students share times they may have noticed an cause- and effect relationship and to share examples. The students might share a
time where they went to bed late and then felt tired coming to school in the morning. This will lead students to understand that the cause
is what they change and is the independent variable and the effect is the dependent variable.
EXPLORE: Lesson Description – Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:

Students will be rotating in stations in groups. Station 1 will have students making flip books on cause-and-effect relationship. The
students will be given a cause and they will have to determine the effect.

Station 2 students will be given and cause on a poster board such has a graphic organizer, and the students will have to be able to
determine multiple effects that could happen. Ex. Picture of an earthquake students can hypothesize several things that could potential
happen by observing the picture. The students will point what is the independent variable and the dependent variables.

Station 3 students will be given a worksheet where they can work on identifying problems given an statement and see if they are able to
work through and explain how they will fix the problem.

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

Concepts that will need to be explained to students is what is an cause and effect relationship. Defining an hypothesis. Independent and
dependent variables.

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

Students can share what they have gathered based upon the information they have gathered.
EVALUATE:

Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion): the teacher will go around and see how students are performing with each other
inside has each student are rotating partners around the classroom.
Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report) (Include a rubric):
At the end of the activity students will answer questions in a worksheet.

Plan for differentiation: (Be sure to specifically address the following learners)
 Students with high-incidence disabilities (e.g., autism, ADHD, mild learning disorders)
I plan to work with the special education teacher has the best possible way to be able to modify activies for my students who are special
needs,.

ELL
I plan to have a lot of visual aids that would be supplemental to this activity, students will be drawing pictures and creating there
own cause and effect \.
 Gifted learners
I can have an additional station where gifted students are making there own cause and effect cards. I can also have students
create there own cause and effect relationship and hypothesis potential ways they can fix by having them write about a story.
Elaborate Further / Reflect: Enrichment:
 How will you evaluate your practice?
I plan to evaluate myself based upon my students reponse to the worksheet questions.
 Where might/did learners struggle in the lesson?
Students may have grasping concepts and not being able to see how an outcome of the cuase,
 How can the lesson be strengthened for improved student learning?
This lesson can be strengthened by maybe allowing students to collaborate more, and more visuals
Did the lesson reflect culturally sustaining pedagogies? If not, how can this be enhanced?
I think this activity is relevant because, if I use cause and effects activites that students can see themselves use outside the classroom
and hypothesize about. The student can see the relation and it can be has simple has it is hot outside that means that the sun is out and I
should wear a short sleeve top.
