Why did Santiago Nasar die?

The answer to this query cannot be, “Santiago Nasar had to die because he was accused of taking
Angela Vicario’s virginity.” Gabriel Garcia Marquez is making a comment about the world as he sees it
using events in this unnamed town in Colombia as evidence in his “essay.” There are many
social/sociological/cultural reasons for the death of Santiago Nasar. Choose one reason and develop your
argument using evidence from the text. Your paragraph must include a topic sentence. You must use at
least two quotations of evidence, and provide analysis and commentary. This is a formal writing
assignment, so your paragraph should be free of grammatical and spelling errors.

Remember the elements of a paragraph:

Topic Sentence - the main claim of the paragraph (must be an argument, not plot description)
Context - necessary information about the story for the evidence (and the argument) to make sense
Evidence - direct passage from the novel that supports the argument
Analysis - interpretation of the evidence, looking at specific language, imagery, and form of
the writing (text-dependent)
Commentary - your explanation of how the meaning of the evidence supports your topic sentence
claim and connects to other elements of the paragraph

Tips:
● Do not use a self evident argument (“Santiago was killed to restore the honor of Angela
Vicario”)
● Do not use evidence that simply establishes plot development (“They’ve killed Santiago
Nasar!”)
● Look back at the passages we have had you analyze; they are all important to the themes
of the novel or reveal something about a character, but require analysis. Your evidence
should do the same.
