Cell Model Project

Objective: Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells
contribute to the function.
ATL Skills: Evaluate evidence and arguments
Directions: You will create a model of an animal cell. You may decide whether you want it to be 2-dimensional
or 3-dimensional. For full-credit, you must display all nine organelles or structures in your model, including
labels and a key. Follow the guidelines below to help you with developing your cell model. After completing
your model, you will evaluate the model.
While planning your model, make sure to read the rubric for the task-specific clarifications, to assess
about what level your model will receive for a grade.

This will be assessed using MYP Criterion A (Rubric on the following page)

Guidelines
● Use common materials such as Styrofoam, cardboard, wood, paper, cereal, play-dough, string, buttons,
pipe cleaners, beads, yarn, etc.
● Be creative, you do not need to spend serious money to make this model!
● Do not use jello, edible fruits, vegetables, or anything that will spoil!
● Create a table as a labeling key: number, organelle, & function.
● Make sure all organelles and numbers are securely attached to the model.
● Location of organelles within the cell must be shown correctly.
● Labels and descriptions of organelles must be typed!
● Project should not be larger than a Frisbee in size.
● Prepare a base for your model.
● Put your name and parallel on the base of your model.

creative use in materials to represent a

All nine organelles are included and consistently applied throughout the model. The key is effective in
identifying the organelles. Each organelle in the key includes a concise but descriptive function.
