Credit Hours: 3
Description:
Most treatments of the period in which Shakespeare wrote describe it in historically retrospective
terms: the most common descriptors, “Renaissance,” “Elizabethan,” “Jacobean,” and “Early
Modern” were not contemporaneous to Shakespeare’s time. Rather, Shakespeare’s
contemporaries believed that they lived in the Millennial Age, the period in which the Devil and
his ministers, the Witches, would be loosed. This has had an effect on the way that Shakespeare’s
plays have been received. The course shall explre the premise that, as a consequence of the
marginalization of witch trial historiography in the study of Shakespeare’s work, the core
problem informing many of Shakespeare’s plays have been misunderstood. Students shall have
the opportunity to do original research toward the end of writing a research paper that adds
knowledge to the field.
Objectives:
At the end of the class, students will be able to Intelligently parse Shakespeare’s language
Discuss and describe the various venues in which Shakespeare’s plays were staged Read an
historical collation toward the end of illustrating the difference between different versions of
Shakespeare’s plays Use primary source evidence to critique articles on Shakespeare’s work
Construct an annotated bibliography Write a research paper on a Shakespearean play that
incorporates published criticism and historical primary source evidence.

Ongoing chaos on the campus makes a more detailed scheduled of readings impractical.
Students are required to come to class. Attendance will be taken every day.
All papers are due in class on the day announced. All essays must be submitted in hard copy,
double-spaced. Electronic submissions will not be graded. Improperly cited essays will not be

Students are not workers. They have no right to strike. They have no right to a free or virtually
free education under existing UPR law. Article 32 of the Reglamento General of the University
of Puerto Rico (below) prohibits interference with the academic and administrative calendar.
Interference with the academic calendar is a violation of the Reglamento, a violation of the
conditions of attending the UPR, a tortious act, and a violation of the civil rights of other
students and employees, including mine. Impeding access to educational and health services has
recently been made a crime. The UPR provides a forum for free and open debate; that forum
includes my class. However, students in my classes are required to understand and honor the
difference between protected speech and conduct AS A PREREQUISITE for passing my course.

these problems in real time. In particular,
